ALBUM REVIEW: Wolfheart – Wolves of Karelia

Finland is a country that holds a considerable amount of mystery, melancholy, and magic. The band Wolfheart hails from this special nation and assists their listeners in grasping the greatness of their wintery world. The leader of the pack, Tuomas Saukkonen has been delivering foolproof Melodic Death Metal in several different projects for a substantial amount of years. When Wolfheart released their first album, Winterborn in 2013, it was clear that this act was establishing themselves as a powerful force in the scene. Now the group is releasing their fifth full-length record, Wolves of Karelia (Napalm Records). This new album is expanding the stately, sullen sound of their coined term, “Winter Metal” to new creative crests. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Heaven Shall Burn – Of Truth and Sacrifice

It’s been four years since the German Extreme Metal act, Heaven Shall Burn, released their last album. After Wanderer (Century Media Records) came out, these hard-hitting fellas took a very justified break. Now with batteries recharged, they’re back with an adventurous new release. The band gifted us with the double album, Of Truth and Sacrifice (Century Media Records) earlier this month and it’s making quite the impression. Known for their aggressive sound and topical lyrics, this ninth full-length release is taking these extreme characteristics to a new level. The band has been around for nearly twenty-five years and they are still taking their massive sound to some exciting, uncharted territories. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Sylosis – Cycle of Suffering

So, Cycle of Suffering (Nuclear Blast) is Sylosis‘ post-hiatus album? Considering how tight the musicianship is and the sense of urgency you could’ve told me that this was released six months after Dormant Heart, and I would’ve bought the lie hook, line, and sinker. For a band that just reformed last year and have worked their way through various personnel changes, this is some remarkable shit. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Black Royal – Firebride

After five years honing their craft with live shows and a trail of EPs, Finnish Stoner/Sludge quartet Black Royal garnered decent praise for 2018’s debut album Lightbringer (Suicide Records). Follow-up Firebride (also Suicide Records) delivers more of the same but with a certain refinement and increased maturity to that Death-flavoured, filthy anger. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Dawn of Solace – Waves

The ingenuity, inventiveness, and inclination of Finnish artist Tuomas Saukkonen appears to have no limits. He is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who has been making music magic for a considerable amount of years. One of his many successful ventures is a solo project called Dawn of Solace. Tuomas released his first record, Darkness (Dead Air Records) in 2006 and the betwiching gloom he captured on that release was different from all his other works. Now it’s time to get another taste of this project’s gothic goodness on the new album, Waves (Noble Demon). Continue reading
