Droneflower – Annie Hart: Live at Saint Vitus Bar

Droneflower is the captivating project by indie chanteuse Marissa Nadler and metal legend Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man, Old Man Gloom). The two of them play off of each other, complimenting their own unique talents to create something natural, unique and beautiful. Their self-titled album came out this spring, just in time for their stunning turn at Roadburn 2019, followed by several strings of tour dates. Droneflower represents nods to some heavy music, with the subtleties art-rock chill greatness, Nadler brings. Their shows, like their album, are formed by a mortar of slick originals and gorgeous, brain-breaking covers such as ‘Estranged’ by Guns N Roses, ‘More Than Words’ by Extreme, and ‘Blood & Tears’ by Danzig, ‘In Spite of Me’ by Morphine and more. Annie Hart, an up and coming artist deserving of a lot more notoriety opened the show at Saint Vitus Bar, in Brooklyn. Photos by Useless Rebel Photography. Continue reading

Slipknot’s Knotfest Roadshow Live at Glen Helen Amphitheater

Slipknot kicked off their epic Knotfest Roadshow last weekend in California and all reports are that the show is the biggest spectacle the band has ever presented. In addition to sick sets from Volbeat, Gojira and Behemoth, Slipknot, performed new songs, stunned the crowd with sights and sounds that exploded the senses, the traveling Slipknot Museum, a chance to try their new No. 9 Whiskey, and more! We missed Behemoth due to a snafu with the venue for being incompetent, but the rest of the show was incredible. Check out the full setlist and photos from Meg Loyal Photography!Continue reading

Saor – Falls of Rauros – Wayfarer Live at Saint Vitus Bar

Another night another show at Saint Vitus Bar. There’s a certain magic to the venue. The fact that there is an entire cult of people in New York City who realize if they go on any given night they are going to find music that they want to see. Music of a darker sort, the kind of stuff that is hard to discover but once you do there is no escape. Such was the case last night as the gathered masses basked in the magic of three of the finest bands in modern black metal, Falls of Rauros, Wayfarer, and Saor. Continue reading

Static-X – Devildriver – Dope – Wednesday 13 – Raven Black: Live at Starland Ballroom

Static-X was one of the best bands to come out of the mid-late 1990s. Sure, they sprung to life during the Nu-Metal craze where every band that wasn’t a traditional heavy metal or death metal was labeled “Nu”. However, Static-X had the DNA of great Industrial Metal bands, pure and simple. When Wayne Static died in 2014, it seemed like the band as an active entity would pass out of existence, although we’d always have the songs. Great songs stand the test of time, and that’s not just lip service, it’s an undeniable truth. So when the notion of the remaining living founding members of the band coming together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Wisconsin Death Trip (Warner Bros), it seemed like the right time. The creation of a new album of tracks featuring Wayne supported by the fans is just a bonus. This entire tour and album, both the idea of it and the execution of it witnessed on this night is a celebration and done with love and good intentions. Leave your cynicism at the door and prepare to throw down! Continue reading

REVIEW: Bloodywood – Armada of Secrets – Pulverise – Tormenta: Live at Rebellion Rock Bar, Manchester (UK)

While I patiently waited in line to enter one of the most beloved metal and rock venues the North of England has to offer (Namely, Rebellion Rock Bar) I somehow got talking to a guy in front of me who aligned himself with, in his own words, “the communal religions”. While practices such as paganism, druidism and a vague belief in “old ways” will be familiar to anyone with a vague knowledge of folk metal themes, it became quickly apparent to me that Bloodywood, a band characterized by their fusing of traditional Indian instrumentation with the groove-laden riffage of nu-metal, is rapidly becoming an important band in the lives of many since they went viral in 2017. It seemed to me that the tribalism and brotherhood of this six-piece promote played a part in aiding this guy through depression, and for a band as young as they are, I was immediately intrigued by what they had to offer.Continue reading

Baroness Live at Rough Trade Records + Art Exhibition

6/14/2019, Rough Trade Records, Ghostcult Magazine, Brooklyn.

Ghost Cult was lucky enough to be among the select few to witness one of Baroness’s special record release gigs. The band released their stellar new album Gold & Grey via their own Abraxan Hymns imprint and wanted to celebrate with their fans. The small intimate affairs dotted the east coast and saw the band perform both unplugged (as a duo) and also with the full band. Even as we waited in line to get into the tiny room at Rough Trade Brooklyn for the show, making conversation with fans who were pumped for the new album, talk of “all-time great bands” was bandied about. It was legit exciting just to be there. People already had bought the album to be signed as well as other merch. Rough Trade does a terrific job with these events and we have been to many diverse ones over the years from Wardruna to most recently, Amanda Palmer. Continue reading
