According to their site World Land Trust (WLT) is a UK-based non-profit environmental organization established in 1989. Its mission included working to ensure conservation of plants, animals and local communities in areas at environmental risk by funding the purchase of land for local NGOs to undertake conservation. It was formerly named the World Wide Land Conservation Trust. In September 2019, Dr. Jonathan Barnard.[2] became the CEO of the World Land Trust. Previously, the position was held by World Land Trust founder, John Burton. Dr Gerard Bertrand, who co-founded World Land Trust, is Honorary President of the charity.

Since 1989, World Land Trust has protected 774,282 acres through the use of land trusts, working with partners in countries across the globe. The Buy an Acre programme seeks to permanently protect land that can be purchased for £100 per acre. More recently, World Land Trust have also protected land through long-term leases. Ownership of all land purchased through World Land Trust belongs to the local NGOs. However, in 2000 a supporter bequeathed World Land Trust Kites Hill, a conservation woodland area in Gloucestershire.
