ALBUM REVIEW: Vatican – Ultra

While Georgian five-piece Vatican may name-check Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan, their roots are firmly planted in (the original type of) metalcore, owing as much to Earth Crisis and Vision of Disorder (et al) as the latter-day spearheads of discordant “popular” heavy music. Ultra (UNFD) may be the band’s second full-length overall, however with a focus on the sound and style, and with the smooth integration of new vocalist Mike Sugars, it feels like a milestone moment in the definition of what Vatican is as a band, and who they are as an artist.

CONCERT REVIEW: Beartooth – Silverstein -The Devil Wears Prada – ERRA, Live at Wildhorse Saloon

Easter Sunday 2022, Silverstein and Beartooth took over Nashville’s premier line dancing bar. Yeah, you read that right. Snuggled in the heart of downtown Nashville, Wildhorse Saloon, which typically serves cowboys and country singers, opened their doors to metalcore. Albeit, they may have opened those doors a little too late. The majority of the line wasn’t even in the venue when ERRA took the stage. However, that’s the only negative I could give the venue. In my six years working in Nashville, this is the cleanest venue with the clearest sound and kindest staff I’ve ever experienced.

ALBUM REVIEW: Silverstein – Misery Made Me

After twenty-two years of being one of the most renowned and influential bands in post-hardcore and emo, it would be respectable to take a hiatus and bask in the legacy for a good while. However, Silverstein continues to knock out new material consistently, never wringing dry of inspiration and reinforcing their veteran status. With new album Misery Made Me (UNFD), the hardcore maestros let their creativity flow freely without forcing anything to appease anyone’s expectations – including their own.

EP REVIEW: Void of Vision – Chronicles II: Heaven

It seems like it’s been an age since the first chapter of Void of Vision Chronicles EPs. Lust showed a band wanting to look outiside of their subgenres bubble in search of new and exciting sounds to bring to the table. Chapter 2 of their saga, Heaven (UNFD) continues on that trend in spades, showing how the band have developed since 2021 and what kind of mark they are trying to make on the scene.

Each song shares a lighthearted and fun energy, yet sends empowering messages about creative expression and freedom from systematic lifestyles. Continue reading
