ALBUM REVIEW: Malevolence – Malicious Intent

The very title of Malevolence’s new record should tell you all you need to know about what to expect.

Malicious Intent (Nuclear Blast) is the third full-length release from the groove-meets-metalcore five-piece outfit hailing from the UK and follows up 2017’s Self Supremacy. Boasting all original members, Malevolence has returned with a vengeance, though one that is tempered.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: Ibaraki – Rashomon

Ibaraki is the new solo project from Trivium’s Matt Heafy, and Rashomon is released through Nuclear Blast, having been over a decade in the making. The name translates as “Wild Trees”, but is also taken from a terrifying Japanese demon of feudal legend, and the concept is a profound affirmation of Heafy’s Japanese-American heritage, incorporating a number of different musical styles. Although the main inspiration clearly sits within the black etal genre, taking influence from the experience of Emperor’s Ihsahn, who co-produced, and whose quirkier ideas from his solo work are peppered throughout the release. ALBUM REVIEW: Pyrithe – Monuments to Impermanence

So, we have got to sit down and talk about how subgenre crazy the extreme metal world has become. It seems like with every week that goes by another fresh batch of new “subgenres” enter the metal lexicon. You see Deafheaven can’t be filed under Black Metal because they’re really a Post Existential Crisis Alternative Shoegaze Latte outfit. Ice Nine Kills’ early stuff was metalcore, but nowadays they’ve drifted over to Slasher Showtunes. I wish good luck to whoever has to classify whatever Pyrithe’s Monuments to Impermanence (Gilead Media).

CONCERT REVIEW: Megadeth – Lamb of God – Trivium – In Flames Live at American Bank Center Arena

Ooohhhh what’s this?!?! Another Metal Tour of The Year! Thank you, may I have another! My city stop was initially scheduled last year but was canceled, so as soon as I saw the tickets go on sale this time around I bought mine immediately. One benefit for tonight’s show was not having to drive six hours, my drive took twelve minutes from home to the venue.

ALBUM REVIEW: Annihilator – Metal II

There’s a fine line between “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and “there’s always room for improvement”, and more often than not the re-recording of old albums usually falls snugly into the former category. No matter how much more accomplished the revised version might sound from a technical standpoint, the overall results rarely change. Lightning in a bottle cannot be captured twice.
