The Bay Strikes Back Tour – Testament, Exodus, and Death Angel – brought a massive dose of thrash to the edge of the Ohio State University campus on Wednesday night with their stop at the Newport Music Hall. The tour celebrates the origins of thrash metal stretching back to the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is incredible that these three bands are still standing on the stage and belting out their music for long-time and new fans alike.
Testament announced on SiriusXM Liquid Metal with Jose “Metal Ambassador” Mangin, that the bands’ new drummer is none other than former Testament drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies, Mr. Bungle, DeadCross). Lombardo, replaces Gene Hoglan, and was in the band from 1998-1999 for The Gathering record and subsequent tour. The band and Mangin commented about the return:
In a new post to his official Instagram account, world-renowned drummer Gene “The Atomic Clock” Hoglan has quit thrash Legends Testament after 10 years as a recording and touring member of the band. No word yet from the band as to who will replace Gene. Testament heads out on the rescheduled tour dates for “The Bay Strikes Back” tour with Exodus and Death Angel this spring. Gene’s last album with Testament was 2020’s Titans’s of Creation, (Nuclear Blast) and you can read our review here.

It’s a little surprising to discover that, despite having known each other for over thirty years, Testament, Exodus, and Death Angel; three leading lights of the Bay Area thrash metal scene have never actually been on the road together before. Dubbed “The Bay Strikes Back”, the first UK date of this neck-snapping triple bill is located, rather appropriately, near the water. Okay, the Bristol Channel might not be the Pacific Ocean, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge might not be quite as impressive as the Golden Gate Bridge, but you can’t have everything now can you.Continue reading →
