ALBUM REVIEW: Suicide Silence – Remember… You Must Die

I have one question for the Suicide Silence lads. Why is it that they are perfectly content to settle on terrible studio production and mix? Yes, I get that The Cleansing and No Time to Bleed were popular and well-regarded in the Deathcore circle, but in all honesty, they were never going to be considered amongst the best metal recordings ever.Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW: R.A.M.B.O. – Defy Extinction

As shitty as the political climate can be, the one silver lining you can rely on is that it’s going to inspire artists and musicians young and old to create some remarkable work. After a long slumber the boys in R.A.M.B.O. woke up to a world of alternative facts, conspiracy theories run amok, Boris Johnson and tales of “rigged” elections. All that kind of nonsense is the stuff that stimulates folks to create albums like Defy Extinction (Relapse Records).

Taylor Young Has Parted Ways with Nails

Tough news for Powerviolence/Hardcore band Nails as Taylor Young has apparently parted ways with the band. Young made the post to his Instagram account while praising his final work with the band, the 10th-anniversary re-issue of their classic Unsilent Death (Six Feet Under Records). Apparently, the split is amicable according to Young, who is also the vocalist and guitarist of Twitching Tongues. As of yet, there has been no comment from the band, as they are generally down on social media.

Disgrace Streaming True Enemy In Entirety

disgrace

Southern California death metal infused hardcore outfit Disgrace will release their debut album True Enemy on March 24, 2015 via Closed Casket Activities and are streaming it below.

Since their 2011 incarnation, Disgrace has released the brutal Songs Of Suffering 12″ EP and a split 7″ with Harness, but the band now grabs the scene by the throat with their mammoth True Enemy debut LP, delivering their dynamic and demoralizing brew of hook-laden, infectious, death metal-infused hardcore with more persuasive power than ever. Recorded and produced at The Pit in Van Nuys, California by vocalist Taylor Young and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Blacklisted), on True Enemy the band’s venomous elements align into one of the most punishing and contagious releases of the year, heavily due to the empowering and clever riffage of guitarist Kyle Thomas.

Disgrace will strike out at backstabbers, cowards and religious zealots with pure fury through one of the most infectious, groove-heavy, death-influenced hardcore records in recent times with True Enemy. Featuring members of Nails, Creatures, Forced Order, and four-fifths of Twitching Tongues, Disgrace devastates with harshness of masters Merauder, Cold As Life and All Out War, yet taking on metallic attributes of early Bolt Thrower, Celtic Frost, Cannibal Corpse and Sepultura, delivering a modern, punishing metallic groove. Disgrace will now grab the scene by its throat with their debut LP, produced and recorded at The Pit in Van Nuys, California by vocalist Taylor Young (also of Nails, Twitching Tongues), and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Blacklisted). True Enemy‘s thirty-four minutes of executioner style metallic hardcore have been shrouded in appropriately grim cover art by legendary artist Dan Seagrave.

Xibalba Streaming Tierra Y Libertad

Xibalba is streaming Tierra Y Libertad, which is now available via Southern Lord Recordings, here.

Stream the official music video for “Enemigo” here.

xibalba

Bearing an impressive arsenal of recordings amassed since 2010, including notable splits, EPs, demos and two prior LPs, each chapter of XIBALBA’s recorded bloodline to date has seen the band expand upon their dense, hateful sound, and their third LP, Tierra Y Libertad, proves to follow this ominous warpath. With some of the band’s most savage death metal-fueled hardcore and decimating breakdowns to date, XIBALBA still continues to impress with new atmospheric tones and harrowing elements with nearly forty-four minutes of unrelenting revolutionary violence. Tierra Y Libertad was recorded by Taylor Young (Nails, Twitching Tongues, Disgrace) at The Pit in Van Nuys, and has once again commissioned Dan Seagrave (Dismember, Entombed, Suffocation) for Tierra Y Libertad‘s cover artwork.

The band has booked a string of upcoming shows:

Feb 07: Soda Bar – San Diego, CA (w/ Excel, Rotting Out)
Feb 18: Bogies – Albany, NY (w/ The Banner)
Feb 19: Haverhill – Haverhill, MA (w/ The Banner)
Feb 20: Amityville Music Hall – Amityville, NY (w/ All Out War, The Banner, Rude Awakening)

Xibalba – Tierra y Libertad

960205_795656627149196_286730962581950973_n

Metalcore is one of the more divisive tags in the world of heavy music; labelling bands like The Devil Wears Prada or August Burns Red with this term causes huge controversy within the metal and hardcore communities. But there are still a few bands out there who want to show the true meaning of this word. Californian ensemble Xibalba are a great example how mixing metal and hardcore can produce devastating results.

Xibalba’s previous two albums, Madre Mia Gracia Por Los Dias and Hasta La Muerte (both Southern Lord) had shown great potential, with the band picking up right inspirations from both doom and death metal worlds and adding a great deal of heaviness to hardcore grooves. However their monolithic density was a tad over-used and at times became slightly monotonous.

Although the mix is not as condensed as on the previous LP’s, make no mistake Tierra y Libertad (Southern Lord) takes no prisoners – it’s a crushing conglomerate of death, sludge metal and hardcore and a massive step forward for Xibalba. Those super-heavy riffs have been retained but with a more creative use of dynamics.

Xibalba continues to create their own style, richly drawing on the ferocity and brutality found in the works of Morbid Angel, Asphyx and on the early Machine Head albums. Mid-paced tempos are as crushing as on any Incantation or Crowbar album. Tierra y Libertad concludes with almost 13-minutes ‘El Vacio’, a sludge/doom-metal orgy with a touch of Neurosis – a perfect ending for this behemoth of an album.

Recorded with Taylor Young of Nails and Twitching Tongues, the man also responsible for the sound on their last album, the production is rich and thick – proof positive, that you don’t change a winning formula. Tierra y Libertad is an album that will redefine the perception of modern Metalcore: a ferocious dose of venom and bile which will shatter barriers between doom, sludge and hardcore which will gain favour with fans of both scenes.
