EXCLUSIVE ALBUM STREAM: NOUS – “NOUS II”

If you have followed Ghost Cult from the olden days when we were a magazine more than a website, you might know we have a deep love for the Avant-garde, experimental, the underground, and the unusual music that dots the landscape as much or more than the mainstream. Coming from way out, but definitely falling under avant-garde and exceptions is NOUS who are releasing their second album, NOUS II tomorrow via Our Silent Canvas. Made up of a who’s who of legendary underground artists such as Christopher Bono (Ghost Against Ghost), Greg Fox (ex-Liturgy), Shahzad Ismaily (Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Bonnie Prince Billy), Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater), Grey McMurray (itsnotyouitsme, Tyondai Braxton) with ACME & yMusic string players, NOUS II is challenging and entrancing to the listener. Turn off your typical playlist and digest this musical brainfood at once right now. Pre-order and stream the full album now!

Enablers – Zones

Most people’s experience of ‘spoken word’ music, outside of the Rap genre, is Jim Morrison‘s ‘American Prayer’. Beat Poetry, for this is essentially the format, is a hugely involving yet highly personal style which often resounds with the listener. This is most definitely the case with Enablers: a San Francisco post-Punk four-piece whose beguiling, occasionally fiery music is set to the poetry and narrative of frontman Pete Simonelli.Continue reading

Various Artists – BC35 Volume Two

Odd, noisy, relaxing, introspective, and uneven are some of the words that can be used to describe BC35 Volume Two and that’s just with regards to the first four songs. For those out of the loop BC35 Volume Two is the second and final piece of the BC Studio anniversary puzzle. In short, producer and cultural antagonist Martin Bisi – known for his recording work with the likes of Helmet, Unsane, Dresden Dolls and more – has assembled a group of musicians and let them kick out the jams. Jarboe – Cut Of The Warrior

Jarboe, or Jarboe La Salle Devereaux as she is known to her accountant, is also the other founding member of the legendary Swans. So, no pressure there, then. She’s also shockingly busy, with a looooong discography, and a new ambient/experimental rock album, Cut Of The Warrior (Translation Loss Records) out this month. But is it her swan song, or will it break this reviewer’s arm?Continue reading

Esben And The Witch – Nowhere

Four years ago, at Cult of Luna’s heralded Beyond The Redshift festival, I saw a band that went toe-to-toe with the headline acts and matched their beauty, elegance, and musical depth. Ten years into their career and with their fourth album Nowhere (Season of Mist) about to grace our ears, we find Esben And The Witch at their darkest.Continue reading
