As we dash towards the holidays and the end of the year Ghost Cult is feeling good about this season of giving. So we are giving our fans a chance to get to know our partners, peers, and friends from bands in the world of music. They will chime in with some guest blogs, end of year lists, and whatever else is on their minds as we pull the plug on 2015. First up is our pal Seth Werkheiser from Skull Toaster Metal Trivia (@skulltoaster)
Hi – metal friends and people who enjoy reading things on the internet. My year-end list is a mix of metal and rock – but for a dude who grew up on Guns N Roses and Helmet – well – this is the sort of year-end list you get from me in 2015. I left some obvious picks (ahem – FNM) off my list – as they’ll get enough attention everywhere else – and tried to focus on picks that found their way into my life by random BandCamp exploring and listening to a handful of fine folk on Twitter (hey – I’m @sethw). Please enjoy.
10. Super Unison – Super Unison
This is Meghan O’Neil’s new band after leaving Punch and this EP is killer.
9. Spylacopa – Parallels
Groovy in some places, atmospheric in others. All makes for a solid album that I’ve spun many times this year.
8. Torpor – From Nothing Comes Everything
Airy and doomy, super loud trio from the UK.
7. Our Oceans – Our Oceans
Ex-Cynic projects will always win me over: catchy- pretty- and bound with energy.
6. Royal Thunder – Crooked Doors
This album is going to age like some sort of hard drink; burning and so smooth.
5. Kowloon Walled City – Grievances
‘Grievances’ sounds like what every overcast, rainy day looks like. And those are my favorite sorts of days.
4. Coliseum – Anxiety’s Kiss
Like an old car with a manual transmission and no power steering, ‘Anxiety’s Kiss’ hurts so good.
3. Mutoid Man – Bridgeburner
This album is majestic, like surfing on the back of a gold-plated eagle that shoots lightning bolts from its eyeballs.
2. OHHMS – Cold
Two songs is more than enough for me. Just like you don’t fast forward classic movies to the “good parts,” so is this album – you listen to the build-ups like an adult!
1. Sleater-Kinney – No Cities to Love
This is the most metal album of the year for me. I get chills listening to each chorus and all that riffing. The vocals on this whole album just sound ferocious – like they mean something.

Spylacopa is streaming their new album Parallels in its entirety. The album is now out via Rising Pulse Records.
John LaMacchia of Spylacopa has posted a making of their latest music video for “Hexes,” the opening track off of their upcoming full length album Parallels, out March 31, 2015 via Rising Pulse. It was produced by LaMacchia, mixed by Ken Schalk (Candiria) and mastered by Julian Silva at On Air Mastering.
Watch it below.
The video was directed by independent video artist and film maker Steve Perlmaster. Watch it below.
Spylacopa, the side project of Candiria guitarist John LaMacchia, has released their Steve Perlmaster directed new music video for “Hexes,” which can be viewed below. This is the project that also features Jeff Caxide of Palms/Isis fame and Julie Christmas (ex-Made Out Of Babies, etc.) Their new album Parallels will be released on March 31, 2015 via Rising Pulse Records.
Spylacopa, the musical brainchild of Candiria guitarist John LaMacchia, is releasing their long awaited debut full length record Parallels on March 31, 2015 via Rising Pulse Records. The album was produced by LaMacchia, mixed by Ken Schalk (Candiria) and mastered by Julian Silva at On Air Mastering. This is their first new release since their 2008 debut self titled EP, and features members of ISIS, Mister Sparx, Palms, Candiria, Made Out Of Babies, Slow Parade and Julie Christmas.
The delay of the album was partly due to the untimely and tragic murder of drummer Troy Young, who was killed in his Brooklyn apartment in December 2009 following an attempted robbery.
“Troy Young Tracked the drums for all the original material that made up the debut EP and most of what makes up this full length which is a huge reason why this record is being released. These are some of the last recordings of Troy Young tracking drums in a professional setting. After meeting Troy’s family during the trial of his murder, I felt somewhat obligated to get this record out. Troy would have wanted this record to come out and I feel that this is a way of helping to keep him active and present. He was such a talented young guy who was just getting a foothold in New York City as a working and functioning musician when he was killed.”
Spylacopa will be releasing their forthcoming album Parallels on March 31, 2015 via Rising Pulse. The project features Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Jeff Caxide (Palms, ex-Isis), Julie Christmas (ex-Made Out Of Babies) and more.
An update was released here:
“Hey folks! It’s Been a minute but we have some great news! The new Spylacopa record, Parallels is scheduled for a late March release. We’ll get the exact date to you soon but in the mean time we just wanted to inform the masses that we received the test pressings from Pirates Press manufacturing and the test pressings sound fan-freakin-tastic!! So things are moving ahead and the record is being pressed up in some brilliantly beautiful colored vinyl configurations as I type this which makes me a little giddy inside.
The photo above [see here] is a shot of the test pressing in motion, on my home system, which is the best way for me to approve test pressings when they come in. Just your basic set up, nothing too special but it does the job. In other Spylacopa related news. Independent film maker and my good friend, Steve Perlmaster has put together a really incredible cast and crew for a short film inspired by the music of Spylacopa.
The first song off the new record, “Hexes”, will have an accompanying short film that will be released some time in the not so distant future. Here’s a shot of my bud Steve, mid shoot, kicking ass and taking names. With inspirations for this film ranging from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction to Brothers Quay’s Crocodile Street we are sure to be entertained by this short film for certain. More on that coming soon.”
