Sleep Leaks End of Year Shows in Chicago, Teases Going on Hiatus

Doom Metal greats Sleep have leaked three shows for the end of 2019 in Chicago at Thalia Hall. The band also shared a cryptic message to social media, teasing the band going on a possible indefinite hiatus. No official announcement has been made, but Facebook events for the three shows appeared this weekend (11/10/2019). The band returned from an eleven-year hiatus in 2009, and have toured semi-regularly for years, releasing a live album – Denver Colorado, The Clarity single (2014), an incredible full-length album The Sciences in 2018, the Leagues Beneath single (also 2018) and a second live album, Live at Third Man Records, released as part of Third Man’s exclusive Vault series. The band also played a career-spanning series of shows at 2019’s Roadburn Festival. Hopefully, this is not the end of the band, just the end of the band for now while the members’ other projects such as OM, High On Fire, and Neurosis come to the fore. Continue reading

Roadburn 2019 – A Fest of a Different Color

Roadburn, now in its 20th year, is a fest I had promised I would start going to many, many years ago but for one reason or another never did. This year I went and although it is like other music fests in some ways, I can say that it is equally unlike other fests in many other ways. Many of my personal experiences will not be akin to a standard festival goer due to the nature of what I do obviously but if you bear with me here I can explain some things that the average person should expect when and if they decide to go is on their list of priorities. If you already know the drill or aren’t interested in this part please feel free to scroll on through.Continue reading

Kurokuma – Sheffield’s Best Metal Bands Vol 1

A cold Yorkshire wind blows through the speakers before a tapped out bass line floats along. It’s immediately reminiscent of the hammered-on, happy-go-lucky turned sinister oddity of Primus’ ‘Here Come The Bastards’, and forms the lilting lynchpin of the song. Quickly, ‘RVN’ becomes a colossal Stoner Metal riff barrage, filled with the same grooving bounce the bass line laid out. Suddenly any quirkiness that evoked feelings of Primus is dissipated, and in its place, a muscular yet peculiar creature is presented. This is Kurokuma.Continue reading

Zaum – Divinations

A histrionic chime of a small bell is the first noise that greets the listener. It seemingly summons spiritual moans and groans that echo in the proverbial temple of Zaum‘s oeuvre. ‘Relic’ begins placidly, slowly building its way up to the riff that forms the song’s centrepiece, and when that riff arrives it is a blissful moment. Continue reading
