Kurokuma – Sheffield’s Best Metal Bands Vol 1

A cold Yorkshire wind blows through the speakers before a tapped out bass line floats along. It’s immediately reminiscent of the hammered-on, happy-go-lucky turned sinister oddity of Primus’ ‘Here Come The Bastards’, and forms the lilting lynchpin of the song. Quickly, ‘RVN’ becomes a colossal Stoner Metal riff barrage, filled with the same grooving bounce the bass line laid out. Suddenly any quirkiness that evoked feelings of Primus is dissipated, and in its place, a muscular yet peculiar creature is presented. This is Kurokuma.Continue reading

Zaum – Divinations

A histrionic chime of a small bell is the first noise that greets the listener. It seemingly summons spiritual moans and groans that echo in the proverbial temple of Zaum‘s oeuvre. ‘Relic’ begins placidly, slowly building its way up to the riff that forms the song’s centrepiece, and when that riff arrives it is a blissful moment. 11PARANOIAS – Asterismal

Drone, much like Djent, is a wonderfully onomatopoeic genre. Say “droooone” out loud and you get somewhere close to the guitar tone that makes up this subset of noise music. It’s also a rather impenetrable genre, taking vast amounts of time to learn the ins and outs of a band’s oeuvre. Drone isn’t music for casual listeners, it requires dedication. When combined with swirling psychedelia and a deluge of Doom you get Asterismal, the latest album from experimental merchants, 11PARANOIAS.Continue reading

Fundraiser Launched For Matt Pike To Defer Costs Of Medical Bills

As we’ve been following the story, Matt Pike of High on Fire and Sleep has had a rough time with his health of late. After a banner year in 2018 which saw stellar releases from both of his bands (and an incredible single too), Pike was forced to cancel two huge headline tours due to ill-health. Any artist not able to tour is in a bad place when it comes to earning money to survive. With medical bills mounting and Pike off the road, for now, a friend has stepped in to help. Respected photographer Tim Bugbee of Tinnitus Photography has covered Matt and his bands for many years. Well-known in the scene for his terrific concert photography, candid shots of artists, interviews, and reviews of bands, Tim is a fixture at shows in his home of Boston, as well as around the world. Amassing a huge archive of photos of hundreds of bands, Bugbee has also shot “roughly 30 shows of Sleep and High On Fire”, according to his site. Now he is selling blown-up photos as a fundraiser for Matt, shipping to the US and Canada. There is an autographed option and 100% of the gross profits from sales will go directly to Matt. This is amazingly kind of Tim and for a great cause. Details below at the link to Tim’s website. Continue reading
