Northwest Hesh Fest is this coming weekend in Portland OR, September 19th – and it looks awesome! Headlined by Red Fang, and featuring appearances by Acid King, Witch Mountain, Big Business, Necrot, Fat Tony, Lord Dying, Nebula, Sasquatch, Holy Grove, and many more. We caught up with Johnny Gaylon, the booker of the fest and past events in Portland and at places such as South By Southwest (SXSW), and we learned about his past history in the scene, just what goes into booking the fest and why downtown Portland rules for events like this! Get your tickets to the event here, check back tomorrow for our festival preview, and check back in a few weeks for a review and photo set.
Like the noble slice of pizza, a cover song, if done well, can be amazing. And if it’s not, it’s still pretty good. It’s tough to cover well-known songs and albums by famous bands because music becomes our lexicon and fans know every little nook and cranny of a track. This is the case with Pink Floyd and their iconic double album The Wall. Luckily Magnetic Eye Records and their incredible “Redux” series is here, and they always do a bang-up job of assembling the talent. Covering the entirety of The Wall seems both ambitious and a little crazy too. While The Wall is lower on my personal list of Floyd favorites, it’s as important as it is beloved by the masses. Before you sink your teeth into this, let me make a quick disclaimer for those of you looking for a standard review. This ain’t it. If you want to read, ad nauseam, about each band that played, who was good, who wasn’t, what songs they played or how many bands are “female fronted,” have female members or where any of these bands are from I can guarantee you a quick internet search will get you your fix somewhere. If you are looking for someone to tell you what any of the bands sound like, look like or act like then here is a novel idea, buy their music, go to a show and form an opinion for yourself. No offense intended to anyone writing something like that or looking for that kind of thing but you won’t find it here because I don’t feel like writing something everyone else has or will. (Offense intended to anyone still finding some ridiculous need to write or read about bands being “female fronted.” Fuck off.)
Oh, also there will be naughty words. Continue reading

The initial lineup seemed to feature every band ever, but now they’ve added Mastodon as the final headliner, and it’s officially one of the sickest bills ever created. Continue reading
