Metallica has kicked off a weekend of celebrations all over their hometown of San Francisco in honor of their 40th Anniversary Concerts and city-wide takeover. Mayor London Breed welcomed Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo from the band in a ceremony at San Francisco City Hall. Watch it now!
Long teased by the band on social media, Metallica has announced the opening of The Metallica Black Box. Debuting with The Black Album Exhibition, the Black Box will offer an unprecedented and ongoing deep dive into every era of Metallica from the early 1980s garage days up to today.

Metallica performed its classic song “Nothing Else Matters” with pop star Miley Cyrus on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” yesterday morning (Thursday, September 9). You can watch video of the performance below. Miley’s appearance was in celebration of release of the remastered deluxe box set of Metallica’s self-titled fifth album and also features Elton John, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, frequent collaborator Andrew Watt and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. Appearing via video link, Elton told Howard his decision to play piano on the star-studded cover was an absolute “no-brainer.” “This is one of the best songs ever written, to me. It’s a song that never gets old. Playing on this track I just couldn’t wait because the chord structure, the melodies, the time changes — it’s got drama written all over it,” he said. Anthrax has concluded their Anthrax 40th Anniversary web series with thoughts on “Worship Music, longevity, and the future. The band wrapped up their 40th-anniversary livestream last month (review here) and are plotting next steps including a new album. Their next show is at Welcome To Rockville in November!
