ALBUM REVIEW: KMFDM – Let Go

KMFDM is celebrating forty years of conceptual continuity with the release of their twenty-third album Let Go (Metropolis Records). Let’s give that one some thought. Forty years holding to a musical concept throughout 23 albums is an achievement not many bands of their ilk can boast, as how many of their peers are this prolific? The sticking point on Let Go might be how continuous that concept is, and at what point are we weighing it against? Continue reading

Priest Shares Their Cover of Rammstein’s “Engel” from the Cleopatra Records Tribute Album

With two back-to-back tours across the US and Europe, festival dates, and a brand-new single all happening in rapid-fire succession, you might think that Priest never sleep, instead fueled by the phantom power of some otherworldly, extraterrestrial entity. While we cannot confirm or deny the validity of that claim, we can attest to the awe-inspiring magnitude of their most recent release, a truly transformative take on Rammstein’s “Engel.” Priest’s “Engel” hammers the mechanized edge of the original into a skin-splitting, piercingly sharp point, with a pounding, bass-heavy beat, gritty, distorted vocal overdubs, and a delicately velveteen, ethereal melody, compliments of female vocalist and Priest visual artist, Greta Helling. Priest reimagines the original by stripping it down to its nuclear core, before quantizing and constructing a truly unique coalescence of electronic and melodic instrumentation that is all their own. A Tribute To Rammstein, available worldwide on August 25th, via Cleopatra Records, and pre-orders are available at the links below. Stream “Engel” by Priest now!

The German Rock scene is legendary for producing exceptional bands like Scorpions and Rammstein. This schnitzel-loving nation is also known for its more niche music acts. Mono Inc. has been at the helm of the Gothic Rock movement since the early 2000s and they show no sign of slowing down.

ALBUM REVIEW: Skáld – Huldufólk

Steeped in Nordic mythology, France’s Skáld draw extensively on traditional folk music and employ the Old Norse language for many of their lyrics. Huldufólk (Decca / Universal Music) is the group’s fourth full-length release and is themed around the subject of its title: huldufólk, or “hidden people” is the name given to the mythical beings — elves, dwarves, trolls — that populate Nordic folklore. Moreover, according to the press release accompanying this record, the work honours “an entire people in whom many Scandinavians still believe”.

ALBUM REVIEW: Turmion Katilot – Omen X

When I was young and brash and had two working knees, I used to visit the high street in Camden, London. Me and my mates would dance ourselves into oblivion at the Electric Ballroom, take the night bus home, hit a Tescos for sausage rolls, and eat them right out the package – cold, before returning to Surrey Quays just before the sun rose.

Those were the times!
