LIVE REVIEW: Gatecreeper – Exhumed – Necrot – Judiaciary: Live at Sanctuary

The Fresh-faced act Gatecreeper and the veteran collective Exhumed both recently released shiny new full-length albums. Just six weeks ago we were gifted with some fresh and fearsome material from these great groups. Now they have joined forces on the road to play their new fantastically foul tunes. The Sanctuary was an ideal venue to host a stop on this tour. It’s the perfect size and atmosphere for the fans to experience an intimate and enjoyable encounter with these Death Metal experts. Just outside of Detroit, The Sanctuary caters particularly well to the heavy. This pocket-sized music club proudly hosts some of the best metal shows that come through Michigan. With venues like this, and local acts like Mutilatred, show us that the metal scene in this state is alive and well. The enthusiastic gang of guys in Mutilatred opened the show with a spunky, spirited set. They even handed out actual paper flyers which gave the night a marvelously old school feel. Continue reading

REVIEW: Beyond Creation – Fallujah –  Arkaik – and Equipoise: Live at The Sanctuary, Detroit MI

The bright blue paint job on The Sanctuary makes it the most inviting building on Cardiff Street. Nestled in the middle of Hamtramck, a pint-sized town in Detroit, The Sanctuary is actually one of the most inviting music venues in the whole city. The Canadian Death Metal act, Beyond Creation brought their proggy and technical goodness to Ham Town earlier this week. It was the second to last gig on a month-long tour with Fallujah, Arkaik, and Equipoise. The band has been promoting their most recent full-length album, Algorythm (Season of Mist) on this run and hearing it played in full made for a perfect Metal Monday. Continue reading

Gozu Live at Sanctuary, Detroit MI

Hamtramck is a cozy-sized town that rests in the heart of the city of Detroit. Surrounded by The Motor City, the younger vibrant venue, The Sanctuary brings a fresh flavor of heaviness to Ham Town. These guys have something happening on their stage nearly every night. The surge of live music around the home of Motown is part of the city’s beautiful, ongoing restoration. Archspire -Virvum – Inferi: Live at The Tiger Room

The Tiger Room rests on the Southside of Louisville, Kentucky. This part-time venue and the part-time strip club is a local favorite. Catering particularly well to the heavy, this venue was an ideal spot for the fourth annual Tech Trek tour. Last Tuesday, the Tech Metal masters, Archspire, along with some friends, came to the Derby City to destroy and conquer. Though the sun was still shining bright, a line of fans all dressed in black battled the heat to hold their spot in line. Shortly after the venue opened its doors, Kentuckian act, Effigy had the first swing on stage. Their local flare was a pleasant way to start the night off. Continue reading

Sinners Bleed – Absolution

The Death, Thrash Metal act, Sinners Bleed caused a stir in the scene when they started out in the late nineties. Hailing from Berlin, this group of guys conjured a unique combination of speed and melody. Though they perked a lot of ears, life happened and the band had to take a step back from their fiery work. After a lengthy hiatus, they are now back and ready to release their second full-length album, Absolution (War Anthem Records). Even after being away for a while, Sinners Bleed has not missed a beat in their noteworthy, aggressive sound. Continue reading

Apocalyptica Live at Tennessee Performing Arts Center

The Tennessee Performing Arts Center rests directly in the heart of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Known for hosting all the Broadway shows that come through Music City, this cultural center is a venue that caters to a variety of performances. Including an occasional Heavy Metal show. The Finnish act, Apocalyptica came to town last Tuesday to celebrate the anniversary of their debut album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos (Mercury/Universal). This acclaimed group of guys, known for their unique use of the Cello, came out with their first record just over twenty years ago and have been on the road all around the world honoring its notable significance.
