The Dollyrots will be hitting the road with Bowling For Soup across the US.

The punk pair of Kelly Ogden [vocals, bass] and Luis Cabezas [guitar, vocals] are bringing someone else along for the ride this time around. Ogden was actually pregnant with the couple’s first child River throughout recording their latest effort Barefoot And Pregnant.

Touring as a family is something new for The Dollyrots, but as Kelly puts it:

“I have plenty of practice playing rough with wild boys, so motherhood’s been a natural thing to make part of my tour life. We consider BFS family as well, so for River it’ll be like having four of his favorite Uncles around 24/7!”

Barefoot And Pregnant marked the group’s first chart appearance with a peak #7 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums and followed a highly successful crowdsourcing campaign through PledgeMusic. It’s out now on Arrested Youth/Hunnypot Records and is the follow-up to the group’s 2012’s self-titled LP, two albums on Joan Jett‘s Blackheart Records, and a 2004 debut through Lookout/Panic Button Records.

Juliet Sims Release All Or Nothing EP

juliet simms_lindsey_byrnes

Juliet Simms has independently released an EP All or Nothing on February 3, 2015 and was produced by Aaron Sprinkle (OneRepublic, Anberlin, He Is We). The six tracks on the EP signal that the music industry rollercoaster that she’s been riding might finally be leveling out on the upswing. Birthed via a very successful PledgeMusic campaign that raised far above its original goal and was released just last week, the EP impressively landed at #1 on Billboard’s New Alternative Artist and #4 on Top New Artist charts.

All or Nothing speaks volumes about who I am as a person… that I am a survivor, that I’m not gonna give up, I’m not gonna stop…. Wait, that’s Destiny’s Child,” laughs rocker JULIET SIMMS about her new self-released EP. In a lot of ways, this child’s destiny is not only as a music industry survivor but also as a testament that when you have that creative spirit and fire, you really can’t be stopped. “In all honesty, the EP represents strength, perseverance, never backing down and owning who you are and never being afraid to voice it at the top of your lungs.”

“This EP and its songs really represent coming back from the ashes and rising like a phoenix,” she says reflectively. Originally breaking through as the mastermind/songwriter behind Warped Tour veterans Automatic Loveletter and then again when she came in second place on NBC’s The Voice, her rise was hampered by industry dysfunction and false promises just as her star began to shine brighter. “About two years ago, I went through a really rough time,” she reflects. “I was no longer with a label, I didn’t really know what was next for me, and I have to admit, I went through a really dark period. These songs represent waking up, realizing it’s not over and you can keep going and do this.”

From the opening call to arms “All or Nothing” (“This song is for any person who’s ever felt less than, that they didn’t fit in, or felt not believed in then taking that emotion and turning it around into an unstoppable fire”) to the anthemic rocker “Mystified” (“It’s about being so hypnotized and overcome by something that you’re not yourself anymore, you’ve gone so numb you can’t even feel the coals you’re walking on”) to the plaintive ballad “Not Broken Yet” which features her partner-in-crime-and-love Andy Biersack of Black Veil Brides on backing vocals, All or Nothing shows a whole new side of Juliet – confident and defiant but still very much alive. “In many ways, I felt I haven’t been able to truly achieve that stylistically until this EP. This is the music I was born to make.”

Instead of turning her back on her past, she’s returning to her roots as a featured performer on this Summer’s Vans Warped Tour. “I’m just so excited to get out there and play on stage with a full band again,” she says. “The Vans Warped Tour is my VERY favorite tour to be on!”

Hawk Eyes – Everything Is Fine

Hawk-Eyes-Everything-Is-Fine

Leeds’ alt.Rockers Hawk Eyes have successfully married US Discord Records style with off-beat prog melodies to good effect. Everything Is Fine (Pledge/Red Vole) is the sound of the band putting their best foot forward and maturing into a more versatile outfit striving to rise to the top of the Brit-rock pack.

The former Chickenhawk have mastered the blend of pop melodies without sacrificing the deliciously punchy nature of their songs. The driving melodies of nineties post-hardcore are injected with a shot of sludge and mathrock passion to great effect. Angular riffs underpin soaring harmonies which give the likes of ‘The Ambassador’ an urgency reminiscent of At The Drive-In.

The exhilarating rush of ‘Die Trying’ with its soaring chorus is another highlight, a deceptively addictive earworm which embeds itself in your cerebral cortex with its catchy lyrics full of righteous determination. The air of confidence the band has gained is never more evident that on the bruising ‘I Never Lose’, which rides an urgent riff and another great chorus.

In the four years since their Ideas (Vinyl Junkie) opus, Hawk Eyes dogged approach to touring has clearly benefited them, honing their craft through touring with rock journeymen such as Therapy?. Their duel vocals are used to great effect and while the maverick spirit of acts like The Melvins hovers over this it never threatens to extinguish the rabid pop nous of tracks like ‘The Ballad Of Michael McGlue’ which flies high on a rousing call and response chorus which declares “I don’t think God is gonna change his mind”.

Gleefully delivering agitated alt rock wrapped in easily swallowed bubblegum melodies Everything Is Fine is a stirring collection which warrants several visits, and the songs flow superbly from one riotous track to the next making this an intoxicating adrenaline rush which you will want to experience frequently.

“Happiness is a risky business” they spit on ‘Terribly Quelled’; it may be one they have to get used to if they continue to progress in such promising fashion.
