Sleep Leaks End of Year Shows in Chicago, Teases Going on Hiatus

Doom Metal greats Sleep have leaked three shows for the end of 2019 in Chicago at Thalia Hall. The band also shared a cryptic message to social media, teasing the band going on a possible indefinite hiatus. No official announcement has been made, but Facebook events for the three shows appeared this weekend (11/10/2019). The band returned from an eleven-year hiatus in 2009, and have toured semi-regularly for years, releasing a live album – Denver Colorado, The Clarity single (2014), an incredible full-length album The Sciences in 2018, the Leagues Beneath single (also 2018) and a second live album, Live at Third Man Records, released as part of Third Man’s exclusive Vault series. The band also played a career-spanning series of shows at 2019’s Roadburn Festival. Hopefully, this is not the end of the band, just the end of the band for now while the members’ other projects such as OM, High On Fire, and Neurosis come to the fore. Continue reading

ALBUM REVIEW – Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear

Alright, guys, it’s time for us to talk about the importance of Cult of Luna. Yeah, that underappreciated Swedish unit that has delivered a consistent series of music both brutal and majestic since 2001’s self-titled effort. Okay, so maybe you arrived late to the party and missed the early portion, but you did catch their mindfuck crossover with Julie Christmas, Mariner, right? No? Well, A Dawn to Fear (Metal Blade) is as good as an entry point as you’re going to get.Continue reading

Pantera’s “Far Beyond Driven” Turns 25 Years Old

It’s the mid-nineties and while the economy is flourishing, our president gets cool points for playing the sax on television and we have Super Metroid, we still found the need to complain. And of all the things to moan about during that decade, one of the silliest is to decry the lack of decent metal. Did we all suddenly forget that Pantera dropped possibly the heaviest release to debut atop the Billboard Top 200 in Far Beyond Driven (Eastwest)?Continue reading

Mastodon – Kvelertak – Mutoid Man: Live at UEA, Norwich

People so often complain that a band isn’t playing their town on a tour. Every announcement is met with requests to play Billy from Stoke’s bedroom – though that would be sweet – and never satiates the audience size. Spare a thought for the people of Norwich who have had to go for years without seeing the glory of Mastodon in their city. As such, tonight’s event is packed out from the moment doors open, and anticipation is at an extreme high.Continue reading
