ALBUM REVIEW: Yautja – The Lurch

You want brutal? You got it! The debut album from Yautja (members of Thou, Coliseum, Mutilation Rites), The Lurch (Relapse Records), is that in spades. If you’re into just an all out onslaught of driving grooves mixed with crazy, double stops, and all the above, this is the cut for you! Not to get too into it, but this is right up my alley. I dig it when a band is their own thing, or their own entity, so to speak. They are just themselves.

Mutilation Rites – Chasm

Brooklyn, New York, based black metallers Mutilation Rites are a name that have been making somewhat of a buzz in some extreme metal and underground circles. Far from being a necessarily revolutionary band, Mutilation Rites’ sound has been predominantly old school based; being raw, frantic and evil sounding; but they have always felt genuine and backed up with quality.Continue reading

An Ocean Of Storms, Susanne A. Maathuis Photography

Part II:

Not many bands can say they played every single day of a four-day festival. Well, Slow Down, Molasses can! The Canadian shoegazers took to the stage at various venues over the weekend. They mostly played songs from their brand new record 100% Sunshine, which you could buy on PINK vinyl (needless to say, we did). Continue reading

On The Road…. Mutilation Rites and Mantar

mutilation rites poster

As much as the underground music fan loves a battle-tested road dog band, don’t let anyone fool you: touring isn’t glamorous, and at times not fun. If it wasn’t for the love of music, why else would people do it? This never more true than for your crusty, blackened metal miscreant bands such as Mutilation Rites. Playing 27 dates over five weeks, crisscrossing the country to do it in a van ain’t exactly for the weak. The only stop of any length is for South By Southwest, which is its own little nightmare in and of itself. On the road supporting last summer’s excellent release Harbinger (Prosthetic Records), Mutilation Rites just finished a tour of Europe and has more gigs in the offing. Joined on the tour by the crushing German duo Mantar, enjoying their first time on tour in the USA, this has to be one of the cooler, truer tours of the early going in 2015. Catching both bands in the intimate 51 West venue in Phoenix AZ, photographer Julian Thompson glimpsed the bands both chilling out before the show, and boiling over live.

Mantar Releasing Death By Burning on May 19th

mantar

Northern German two piece monster Mantar is releasing their debut album Death By Burning on May 19, 2015 via Brutal Panda Records. The LP versions will include a full download of Death By Burning along with an exclusive 8 track live set from the band’s German St. Pauli Sessions. Footage from those sessions can be viewed below.

Recorded in 2013 and titled Death By Burning, the album was originally released to immense critical acclaim in Europe in 2014 by Svart Records, and is a raw, self-produced, and 100% DIY display of power. Managing to sound even heavier than most five-piece bands, in spite of the fact that no bass guitar was used on the record, Death by Burning channels early Melvins, Motorhead, and Darkthrone, to deliver a deliciously evil blend of blackened punk. A music video for the song “March of the Crows” can be viewed below.

The half-German/half-Turkish duo, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Hanno Klaenhardt and drummer Erinc Sakarya, are currently on their first US tour with American black metallers Mutilation Rites.

Orbweaver Recruit Ex-Trivium Nick Augusto As New Drummer

orbweaver

Miami hallucinatory metal collective Orbweaver has recruited Nick Augusto (ex-Trivium/Maruta) as their new drummer. Currently immersed in the pre-production stages of their next album, tentatively titled Hexagram 23, at Shadowlit Studios, Augusto’s authoritative drum style and sense of musical adventure adds a new creative dimension to Orbweaver’s already eclectic brand of pummel.

Comments Augusto of uniting with band,

“I’m happy to have been asked to be a part Orbweaver. We have all played shows with each other’s bands in the past and have been friends in this scene for quite some time now. I’ve jammed with [guitarist/vocalist] Randy [Piro] before, so the timing was right when we got a hold of each other to join forces and write new material. Looking forward to what this new CD and the future holds for Orbweaver!”

The band has these upcoming shows booked:

Mar 26: Churchill’s Pub – Miami, FL (w /Mutilation Rites, Mantar)
Apr 03: Churchill’s Pub – Miami, FL (w/ Insatanity, Koroidia)
May 08: Churchill’s Pub – Miami, FL (w/ Cave Of Swimmers (CD release), Cave Of Swimmers)
