En Minor is a project that had been rattling around in Philip H. Anselmo“s head since he was a child; they are an unexpectedly emotional and deeply serious sound that freefalls out of the genres most of the band members are associated with, including Anselmo himself, and into uncharted territory. Unconventional and, in many ways, experimental, their 2020 release, When the Cold Truth Has Worn Its Miserable Welcome Out (Housecore Records) is steeped in reverence to the Jazz tradition in New Orleans, and maybe more markedly serves as a morose interpretation of a Jazz Funeral March with hints of Vaudeville; an unironic gothic twist on Tom Waits that Anselmo has since self-described as Depression Core.

Stoner rock overlords High On Fire took a break recently from recording their new album for a short tour of the East Coast to flex their chops. Playing the Webster Theater Underground with openers Windhand, Mountain of Wizard and up and comers Birch Hill Damn, Matt Pike and crew blasted through a set that included three new songs. From all reports if ‘Sunless Years’, ‘Carcosa’, ‘The Black Plot Design’ are any indication, their new record, now being recorded with Kurt Ballou at his Godcity Studios, is going to be a barnburner. Mountain Of Wizard, who feature members of Eyehategod, Classhole and Mystick Krewe Of Clearlight, will kick off the new year with a brief run of dates supporting High On Fire.
Formed in 2008, MOUNTAIN OF WIZARD worships at the altar of the riff boasting a thick, raging, blues-ridden Bayou swagger seemingly inherent to their swampy surroundings. The band independently released a two-song seven inch earlier this year with a full-length slated to surface sometime in 2015 via Swedish imprint, Skrammel Records. In the meantime, turn up and tune out to the soul-shrouded sounds of “Sorceror’s Deathbed” here.
