ALBUM REVIEW: Michael Catton – Point Of No Return

Ace vocalist/songwriter Michael Catton’s first solo collection Point Of No Return (Mighty Music) sounds like a “Best of the Eighties” tribute album, while effectively showcasing the considerable talents of the man himself and all involved.

ALBUM REVIEW: Electric Boys – Grand Explosivos

Swedish rockers Electric Boys had a bit of success in the late eighties and early nineties when their boisterous Funk Metal track “All Hips n’ Lips” caught the eye of MTV and their first two albums, Funk O Metal Carpet Ride and Groovus Maximus, caught the eye of the public. Things fizzled out in 1994 but they reunited fifteen years later and have been steadily releasing new material since.

ALBUM REVIEW: Demolizer – Post Necrotic Human

Demolizer comes is a thrash band that comes to us from Denmark. Formed in 2018, the band has been working at a breakneck speed that is as fast and intense as the music they play. After a successful debut album, Thrashmaggedon, and an EP, the band is back with their second full-length, Post Necrotic Human (Mighty Music).

ALBUM REVIEW: Nighthawk – Prowler

Nighthawk’s Prowler (Mighty Music) is a fun romp through some good old-fashioned rock and roll. Prowler has the feel of a classic album while being firmly new. Bjorn “Speed” Strid’s (Soilwork, At The Movies) vocals are immaculate, the guitars are blistering, and the riffs are “classic”. ‘Running Wild’ is the second track on the album and it takes me back to the gritty eighties. It evokes black Trans Ams being driven by fluffy-haired gents with sweet ‘taches. ‘Running Wild’ has a distinct sound that blends elements of hard rock and blues rock. The song has a great keyboard riff and melodic, storytelling lyrics.

ALBUM REVIEW: Liv Sin – KaliYuga

Sweden’s Liv Jagrell has proven she is a fitting heavy metal ambassador for this or any time, honoring both the rich history of the genre, or more modern styles with her raspy, enthusiastic ease. Be it Sister Sin‘s perfectly delivered heavy gutter glam n’ roll or the cruncified blend of styles in the Liv Sin band, she fully commits to the belief that metal is a valid way of life and the really silly ones are those who doubt and thus miss out.

Shredhead released Death is Righteous January 13 on Mighty Music. The album is streaming in its entirety here. Mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (Suicide Silence, The Haunted, Aborted, Sick of It All), the new album redefines Shredhead’s musical style, making it more mature, more melodic, more groovy, and much heavier than anything they’ve done. Throughout 41 intense minutes the band blasts away with brute force. Ranging from songs that are aggressive and fast to laid back and groovy, the music is enhanced by lyrics that hit close to home. The name of the album describes the concept, which is that death comes to us all in the end, just as it should. These 11 tracks map the way to self-destruction, in all of its aspects and forms in a life that needs to end. On Death is Righteous the now Berlin-based group brings what’s true and honest with a relentless energy that resonates from the first note to the last word.

Shredhead – Death Is Righteous

Shredhead-Death-Is-Righteous-album-cover

German-based Israeli quartet Shredhead have just released their sophomore album, Death Is Righteous (Mighty Music). Despite the cheesy moniker and gaudy album artwork, the band – Aharon Ragoza (vocals), Yotam Nagor (guitars), Lee Lavy (bass) and Roee Kahana (drums) – are actually a surprisingly tight thrash outfit.

Muscular, groove-laden riffing is the order of the day, and everything on Death Is Righteous brings to mind the likes of Pantera circa ’91-94, Lamb of God, Sylosis and Dolving-era The Haunted. Such hero worship works out well; generally it’s a relentless swirl of shredding, squealing solos, Anselmo-esque screams and pummelling drums.

There’s plenty of good songs too; ‘Devil’s Race’, ‘The Lie’ and ‘Walk with the Dead’ all get the blood pumping with a furious mix of speed, groove and aggression. The likes of ‘Last Words Are Lost’ and ‘Hallucinations’ even stray into death metal territory. Shredhead are clearly a talented band – Nagor’s guitar work is especially impressive at times – and the ferocity rarely lets up and the appearance of Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Suicide Silence and Dark Tranquillity) on mixing/mastering duties give the whole thing a clear but muscular sound.

Unfortunately the consistency isn’t there and the song writing often lets them down. None of the songs are bad, but it’s often a case of once heard, soon forgotten – the title track is fairly non-descript and the album distinctly tails off towards the end.

If you’re after a stop gap until the next Lamb of God release, this should tide you over nicely. For the majority of its 42 minute runtime, Death Is Righteous delivers an enjoyable excuse to head bang. Unfortunately there’s too few standout moments for this to be a memorable or enduring listen, but maybe ones to watch for the future.

6.5/10
