FESTIVAL REVIEW: Exit 111 Festival 2019 – Manchester, Tennessee

Exit 111 Festival, aptly named for the highway exit in Manchester TN, made its début October 11-13, 2019. Arriving in powers of three, it was three days of riffs, rock, and rowdiness. One part Metal, one part Rock, one Southern rock, and a whole lot of nostalgia, the event hosted three stages: the Rise Above Stage (honored suicide awareness and featured many of the Classic rock/Southern rock acts), Heaven Stage (the main stage and home to the headliners), and Hell Stage (spotlighted mainly heavy artists).Continue reading

Crypt Trip – Haze Country

For some in the music world, the sixties never really ended and this is especially true with Crypt Trip’s Haze Country. Both a throwback and refreshing, Haze Country (Heavy Psych Sounds) lets us sit back and relive the good old days of psychedelics, marijuana and hippie Shenanigans. Even from the album cover: the aesthetic and nostalgic tinged photograph of the band mounted on motorbikes, it really does feel like this record was lost in time and it’s only just been rediscovered in your Dad’s cupboard of old LPs.Continue reading

Monster Truck – True Rocker

If, as world-renowned loud mouth Gene Simmons has more than once mused, rock is dead then someone forgot to pass the message on to Monster Truck. The Canadian four-piece have been churning out no-nonsense Rock since 2009, with their third album True Rockers (Mascot) carrying on their energetic mix of Southern and Classic Rock but, this time, with a few modern touches.Continue reading

Clutch – The Book of Bad Decisions

Death. Taxes. Clutch. That should be the new pecking order of the old adage going forward. The band remains a beacon to disciples of honest rock and roll music, with no pretense. I mean I don’t think this band could act pretentious in any way if you paid them millions of dollars to do it. As one of the most consistent bands of the last musical generation, it’s never really a question of if the new Clutch album will be good, but rather “How good is that new Clutch, bruh?” Their last few efforts have been especially stellar and seemed to be building to something huge. That something is their new release The Book of Bad Decisions (Weathermaker Music).Continue reading

Former Lynyrd Skynyrd Guitarist Ed King Dies, Age 68

Sad news as former Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Ed King has died. He was 68. No cause of death for King was released, but he was reportedly been battling lung cancer and had recently been hospitalized for some time. King’s family confirmed his passing on his Facebook page. They wrote: “It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Ed King who died at his home in Nashville, Tennessee on August 22nd, 2018. We thank his many friends and fans for their love and support of Ed during his life and career.” King was an incredible guitar player and songwriter who first gained fame as a founding member of psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock (‘Insense And Peppermints’) before joining Skynyrd. With Skynyrd, he co-wrote their signature song, ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, played on their seminal first three albums Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd (1973), 1974’s Second Helping (1974) and Nuthin’ Fancy (1975). He played with the band from 1972 to 1975, and again from 1987 to 1996 and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2006. We send out condolences to Ed’s family, friends and fans at this time. Continue reading
