Progressive rock supergroup Blackfield will see their greatest hits collection released on September 28th from Kscope records. Open Mind: The Best Of Blackfield features 15 essential tracks, including ‘Blackfield’, ‘Once’, ‘Family Man’ and ‘Pain’. Blackfield is comprised of Israeli songwriter and musician Aviv Geffen, and British musician and producer Steven Wilson. Lunatic Soul – Under The Fragmented Sky
It is often found that from tremendous despair comes profound and reflective art. It is such a tragedy that seems to hang over the current works of one Mariusz Duda; that being the unexpected death of Riverside guitarist and close friend Piotr Grudziński in 2016. Gazpacho – Soyuz
Over the course of, up until now, nine studio albums Norwegian band Gazpacho have resided in a musical plane entirely of their own, and have consistently shown to be one of most captivating and spellbinding bands of today as a result. Trying to define their sound or vision aside from describing them as an art/avant-garde rock outfit is near impossible with each passing release giving different movements and colours; what is usually a definite however is that the music will be densely packed, complex and often shows an embrace for the dark and melancholic; either vividly or perhaps beneath the surface. TesseracT- Sonder
Over the course of three full-length albums plus numerous EP releases and reworked pieces, UK progressive metallers TesseracT have shown a propensity for continued change in their music. Making a firm impact on their first full release One, spearheading the then emerging Djent scene, even then they seemed on a different plain of thinking to their brethren and quickly began to branch out. The follow-up Altered State (both Century Media) saw more expansive structures and reduced before Polaris (Kscope) brought refinement, melodic and immediate songs; all throughout retaining enough core to still be recognisable.Continue reading

As one half and the musical engine room of one of contemporary Prog’s most beloved groups Iamthemorning, Gleb Kolyadin is one of progressive rock’s hidden gems and undeniably one of its greatest pure musical talents; a virtuoso pianist and a proven composer with Iamthemorning, whose brand of chamber music and progressive rock has gained not only critical and fan acclaim, but earned Gleb plaudits for his talent from peers such as Daniel Cavanagh and Steve Hogarth. Godsticks – Faced With Rage
Whilst perhaps not the most obvious sounding progressive band, Wales’ Godsticks are one that have undergone some significant transformation over their course. 2015’s Emergence (self-released) particularly showed a grittier edge with a heavier, near metallic sound and feel throughout. In this time, mainman Darran Charles has had an influential stint with proggers The Pineapple Thief during a very successful time for them, whilst Godsticks themselves have signed to Kscope (also home to The Pineapple Thief). Perhaps as a result of Charles’ time with PT, latest album Faced With Rage is the band’s most rounded album and feels like a pinnacle of their career to date.Continue reading
