Press on, intrepid reader, to find out our top albums of 2022, as voted for by the cast, crew and hangers-on of the good ship Ghost Cult. Over 275 albums were nominated (including one stray and errant vote for Stryper… we’ve had words), some people lauded albums as the greatest of all time that no one else noticed, other albums picked up a steady stream of votes across the board without tickling the top of anyone’s charts, but through it all, we’ve been able to compile our team list of the best 75 albums of the year. And there are some absolute corkers, here. 75 of them, to be exact…

CONCERT REVIEW: Mercyful Fate – Kreator – Midnight Live at Kings Theatre

Going to the King’s Theatre always feels like a pilgrimage if you don’t have a car. It’s a little trek from the closest train station. But, it’s worth it to see the legendary Mercyful Fate. The last I saw them was also in Brooklyn, in 1999 for the 9 album tour at the (former) “Rock Capital of Brooklyn”, L’Amour. So this was a hell of a size upgrade. I’ve seen all of these bands at different times. It’s fitting to catch them at such a fancy venue.

ALBUM REVIEW: Detherous – Unrelenting Malevolence

Detherous is quickly becoming a band to pay attention to. Their 2019 debut, Hacked to Death was a balls-to-the-wall thrasher with a killer Kreator-meets-Death sound that easily put the band on many playlists. The Canadian band’s follow-up solidifies the group’s thrash meets death metal style with more unrelenting riffs, bombastic drums, and savage vocals that invoke the great Chuck Schuldiner.

ALBUM REVIEW: Sigh – Shiki

Four years after previous studio outing, Heir To Despair (Candlelight), Japanese avant-garde black metal act Sigh switch record labels once again and return with twelfth full length album Shiki (Peaceville). In their native language, the title translates into many different things such as ceremony, colour and motivation but the main themes present here are “four seasons” and “time to die”. A concept derived from a traditional Japanese poem, frontman Mirai Kawashima takes an existential approach to the seasons, watching cherry blossoms (a symbol of Spring) in full bloom while going through the Autumnal stage of his life with Winter just around the corner.Continue reading
