Papa Roach – Who Do You Trust?

I don’t think a history lesson is needed in regard to the musical stylings of Papa Roach, one-time nu-Metal darlings and voice of a generation to Rock gods in waiting. New album Who Do You Trust? (Eleven Seven Music) is now over the horizon and for a band that has been treading water for too long, maybe this is the album that pushes them back to the heights they once reached?Continue reading

Born Of Osiris – The Simulation

Along with the likes of After The Burial and Veil of Maya, Born Of Osiris spearheaded a wave of bands who looked to take Death/Metalcore into new realms with a healthy dose of electronics and progressive elements added to the mix. To this day their debut EP, The New Reign is a genre classic. The Simulation is their latest offering and comes off the back of a real return to form that was Soul Sphere (all Sumerian).Continue reading

Callejon – Hartgeld Im Club

Well, I can’t think of a better way to open a new year of music than with a review of German Metalcore band covering Rap songs. That band is Callejon and the album is called Hartgeld Im Club (Century Media) and this could easily go down as one of the most polarizing releases of the year.Continue reading

Irk – Recipes From The Bible

I get a real kick not only out of reviewing a band from the UK, but also a band that are from the city I hold very dear. Irk are a Noise Rock trio from the bastion of Yorkshire, Leeds. It will never be the most commercial genre, but there is a lot about Irk that is worthy of note, and to show exactly what they’re all about, they have served up their self-released crowdfunded debut album, Recipes From The Bible.Continue reading

Cattle Decapitation – Medium Rarities

It almost seems fitting that we now get to delve back into the archives for this latest release from Death/Grind legends Cattle Decapitation. This is a band that has always looked to blend their eco-friendly message with some of the most horrible and gloriously grimy, putrid Death Metal ever committed to tape: they want to you not only listen but feel what they want to say. Continue reading

Planet B – Planet B

What a truly intriguing mix of styles this appears on paper! A duo comprised of Punk underground overlord and current Dead Cross member Justin Pearson and hip-hop producer Luke Henshaw, Planet B are bringing so much to the table of their self-titled album (Ipecac Recordings) and are doing do with politically charged lyrics which are looking to rail against “the lack of humanity in the world…….”Continue reading

Psycroptic – As The Kingdom Drowns

I imagine if you as far into your career as Death Metal veterans Psycroptic are right now, you reach a certain point where it’s either stick or twist. Their albums since the very start have always delivered the goods but it wasn’t until 2003’s Scepter Of The Ancients (Unique Leader) that it truly felt like the band had arrived, they then proceeded to tread water somewhat with albums that never even came close to ScepterContinue reading

The Browning – Geist

Being able to sound fresh both within metal, and then within your own career, is a hard thing to achieve. So, credit where credit is due, The Browning are still leading the way with their brand of synth-heavy Metalcore. New album Geist (Spinefarm Records) shows the band cementing their sound and even bringing more extremity to the table.Continue reading

Hail The Sun – Mental Knife

Californian band Hail The Sun have been knocking around for a few years now with their debut, the brilliantly titled POW Right In The Kisser being self-released back in 2010. They have always seemed to me at least a band with an intriguing set of influences and styles that have never quite meshed together over an entire album. Latest release Mental Knife (Equal Vision) is set to change all that and then some.Continue reading
