One of the most anticipated albums of 2019, Silvertomb is made up of some pretty famous alumni of pretty legendary bands. Flying behind the sails of creativity from the talents of Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative fame, the pair have played together since their were teens, and in other bands as well. But this time with help from some other stellar musicians, they have really coalesced sound of their influences, mainly classic Doom, Prog Rock, and Stoner Rock, into a signature style, to create the music that makes up their full-length debut album, Edge of Existence (Longbranch/SPV). When The World Becomes Undone (Long Branch Records) is the type of album that at the initial scan I really wanted to love. I’ve discussed my fondness of all things early to mid-nineties Roadrunner Records ad nauseum on other reviews so I’ll spare you the love letter here, but with so much connection between A Pale Horse Named Death and Type O Negative you can likely understand where I’m coming from. Ghost Cult was lucky enough to catch up with the guys in Silvertomb (Type O Negative, Inhuman, Agnostic Front) in Philadelphia last fall, while they were on tour opening for Life Of Agony. The guys talked about Silvertomb’s debut single, ‘Insomnia’, fill in drummer Frank Godla (Meek Is Murder, Metal Injection), finishing their debut album, finding a record label, cover songs, and more. Thanks to the guys giving us a few minutes of their time, right before they went on stage. Sorry for the wonky sound for the first minute! Year of The Knife was on stage right next door and ruling hard. Interview by Keefy with photos and videography by Omar Cordy of OJC Photography.
On the strength of their debut single, ‘Insomnia’, doom supergroup Silvertomb has booked their first full tour. They will support Life Of Agony on their upcoming Rise of the Underground fall us tour, kicking off this week. Silvertomb, the psychedelic doom supergroup led by Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey on lead vocals and guitar, has released their debut single, ‘Insomnia’. The track is streaming on all digital service providers right now! ‘Insomnia’ is a bluesy, trippy and heavy track that highlights the Hickey’s soulful vocals and the bands’ ability to blend doom and stoner influences with psychedelic rock. The band also includes Type O Negative/ Danzig/A Pale Horse Named Death drummer Johnny Kelly, along with Joseph James, Hank Hell, Aaron Joos. If this is any indication of what the band is working with, we can’t wait to hear more! Continue reading
As we do every day of the year here at Ghost Cult, we celebrate the life and work of Peter Steele from Type O Negative, who passed away on this date (4/14) in 2010. We remember him especially on the day of his passing, and his birth, January 4th, but really all the time. Carry Peter with you today, and if he affected you personally with his music in Type O or Carnivore, or just in some special way. Share it with others to keep his memory alive. You can see a bunch of retrospective content below. Continue reading
Few bands ever “make it” as successful touring and recording artists. It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock and roll, or even the lower middle rung of sales and touring if you play rock or metal. For Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly, they saw the top of the mountain with their legendary 1990s band Type O Negative, with huge selling albums, world tours and mainstream success. Each has had success as session and touring musicians as well as other bands they have been in. With their new band Silvertomb, they are returning to the doom and gloom of their roots, but also goth and psychedelic influences to take this project in a new direction. Ghost Cult’s Keefy got to hang out with Kenny, bassist Hank Hell, and guitarist, keyboardist Aaron Joos before their second show ever in New Jersey. Together we talked about the new band, shopping their demo to labels, giving back to fans and their community, and of course the legacy of Type O and late frontman Peter Steele. Videography by Omar Cordy with assistance by Heather Wilkerson for Ghost Cult.
