Ghost Cult caught up recently with record label chief and world-famous chef Chris Santos. In addition to being an award-winning restaurateur, Santos co-owns Blacklight Media Records, a sub-label from Metal Blade Records. Black Light Media is home to bands such as Gozu, Eyes Of The Sun, Mother Feather, Winter Wolf, Made For Lying, and new signing Opulence. We chatted with Chris about his life growing up in the New York City Metal and Hardcore scene, what originally ignited his passion for cooking, and later restaurants, his relationship with Metal Blade’s Brian Slagel, how he goes about choosing bands to work with, as well as some hot takes on the current landscape of metal, such as Slayer’s retirement.Continue reading

These guys have something happening on their stage nearly every night. The surge of live music around the home of Motown is part of the city’s beautiful, ongoing restoration. Boston’s own Gozu is a hardworking band that have been on a short headlining run for the last couple of weeks. The Sanctuary was lucky enough to be one of their stops.Continue reading

For the second year in a row, the US stakes their claim to holding a fest the equivalent of a Desertfest or Roadburn level of excellence in the form of Psycho Las Vegas. Last years’ inaugural Psycho California was a hit by all accounts, and therefore not a surprise that Vegas was the locale of choice for round two. Definitely the town is a bigger draw for the bands themselves and some party minded fans, although a few days is really all your should ever spend there at once.
Stoner rock boys Gozu has a new album out. It’s called Revival (Ripple Music) and it’s a belter. The Boston unit’s third album sees them continue to ply the same brand of muscular stoner-meets-grunge riffs and melodic vocals they’ve been honing since 2009. But the songs are tighter, the riffs bigger, and the quality vocals are allowed to take center stage.
From the battering ‘Nature Boy’ to the grungy ‘Bubble Time’ and slow groove of ‘Oldie’’ Revival rarely has a note out of place. The guitar work, courtesy of Marc Gaffney and Doug Sherman, stretch from almost Black Label Society-esque shredding to Josh Homme levels of fuzziness. The ability to blend both extremes into one record is one of the things that make the album so enjoyable.
At their best, Gozu sound like Kyuss fronted by Chris Cornell. Marc Gaffney’s turn in front of the mic gives an already quality band that extra edge. From the bluesy ‘Dee Dee McCall’ to the swampy but stadium size ‘Big Casino’ and even the slow jam outro of ‘Tin Chicken’; Gozu know how to craft a great song and fill it with catchy riffs and big solos.
From start to finish, Revival is brimming with energy and a stash of riffs. One of the best stoner albums of the year.
