ALBUM REVIEW: Kamchatka – Hoodoo Lightning

GC might have already released it’s End of Year list, but that doesn’t mean the machine stops rolling. There’s always more to review. And Swedish stoner trio Kamchatka have dropped Hoodoo Lightning (Border Music) as a last-minute Christmas present for those who dig the late-60s and 70s. Continue reading

The Primals – All Love Is True Love

The opening discordant, overdriven stabs of ‘Hello Cruel World’ set the tone for The Primals debut album All Love Is True Love (Southern Lord), a tone that summons the spirit of the fuzziest, poppiest and dirtiest moments of Nirvana’s In Utero (Geffen) jamming with The Pixies and that is every bit as gorgeously sincere as that sounds. Saint Vitus – Tombstones Live At Little Devil, Tilburg, NL

Sometimes rare gigs come along you just need to attend f you can. Legendary American Doom metal band Saint Vitus playing the tiny, 150 person capacity Little Devil bar, a venue with its own cult status and following, was just something I knew would be special. On a nice, warm sunny Saturday may 6th, I go find some refuge from the sun and cheer in the cold desolate tones of Doom!Continue reading

Red Fang – Only Ghosts

Red Fang Only Ghost Album cover

October is always a big month. It’s basically a month-long party for me with the greatest holiday in existence, Halloween, and my birthday is only a few days beforehand. In my experience, October is also a great month for new releases from bands that I love. This year, Portland, OR based stoner metal/rock band Red Fang return with their fourth studio release entitled Only Ghosts (Relapse Records). It’s different from their previous releases, but that’s part of what makes this album as entertaining as it is.Continue reading
