Metallica and Guns N Roses are Among The Worlds Highest-Paid Celebrities According to Forbes

Forbes has released their annual list of the worlds highest-paid celebrities and on the strength of their massive grossing world tours, Metallica and Guns n Roses made the list. Metallica is back on the list after missing in 2018, ranked No. 21 this year with $65 million. GNR also failed to make the list last year but landed at No. 71 in 2019 with $44 million. The annual Celebrity 100 ranks the world’s highest-paid celebrities in music, sports, and entertainment according to what they made over the last 12 months. Sadly, Taylor Swift is still the highest-paid celebrity in the world, earning $185 million over the past year. Music industry trade magazine Pollstar recently named Metallica one of the top-earning hard rock and metal tours of the “2019 Midyear” reporting period, which covered the six-month range from November 22, 2018, to May 22, 2019. The ongoing “WorldWired” trek continued to be a hot ticket, as the group’s 21 North American arena shows during the reporting period grossed a total of $41.7 million, good for an average per-show gross of $1.99 million. With an average attendance of more than 16,000, the band moved nearly 350,000 tickets altogether. Guns’ “Not In This Lifetime” tour is believed to be the second-highest-grossing tour of all time, having generated more than $500 million since it began three years ago. The trek began in April 2016, and after 159 shows in 41 countries, it played its last date at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 8, 2018. Continue reading

Judas Priest Released “Hell Bent For Leather” 40 Years Ago

Judas Priest was already one of the most successful bands of their time in the mid-to late 1970s by the release of their fifth album. Dubbed Killing Machine (Columbia) in Europe, the album was re-titled Hell Bent For Leather for it’s U.S. release and is now commonly known by that name. The album was destined to be a smash anyway with some mega-hits, but the real gem would be their cover of Fleetwood Mac original ‘The Green Manilishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown)’. The track would go on to become the best-known song from the album, one of the most loved songs by the band and one of the best cover songs in history. Continue reading

Sólstafir – Berdreyminn

Twenty-two years into a career is usually not a time to make a career high point. If you are Icelandic rockers Sólstafir who have already had a career full of great albums, consistent as they are original, it would seem unlikely that the 11th release would be the one where all elements would catalyze so beautifully into a masterwork. This is exactly what they have done on their new album, Berdreyminn (Season of Mist).Continue reading

Horisont – Odyssey

Horisont-Odyssey

The term ‘retro rock’ is quite an ambiguous and, at times, ignorant one; used to describe any band that shows obvious traits from vintage bands whilst often ignoring when the band steps beyond these pigeonholes. Sweden’s Horisont have lived with the retro tag throughout their career with good reason up to this point, proving fairly rigid and set in their ways. On latest opus Odyssey (Rise Above) however, they have upped their game significantly.

Building on the slight elements of progressive rock on their last album, here those 70’s Prog influences are vivid and much more central to the album’s fabric, as evidenced by the opening 10 minute, synth driven title track. As much influenced by the likes of Jeff Wayne and Yes as the likes of Fleetwood Mac and even hints of psychedelic elements ala Hawkwind, Odyssey is a very colourful and quirky album that oozes character and charm with as many hooks as it has left-field signatures.

Where it suffers is in its duration; with two songs above the 8 minute mark and most others around 5-6 it proves a time consuming and somewhat arduous one to fully grasp and digest. Given time however and this has a wealth of gold to delve in to.

Where Horisont may have firm classic influences, from classic rock to the more progressive arena now, how they meld them together and evolve themselves shows why they are so much more than just a ‘retro rock’ act.

No less fun, but with a greater sense of discovery to them than many of their peers.
