Five Finger Death Punch, Rob Zombie, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, Limp Bizkit, and More Confirmed for Blue Ridge Rock Festival

Quickly shaping up to be the biggest music festival in the USA this year, Blue Ridge Rock festival has announced their full line-up of 180 bands. Headlining the massive 4 day festival are Five Finger Death Punch, Rob Zombie, Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, and Limp Bizkit. There is a special club warm up show which includes headliner Ludacris, T-Pain, and Lil Jon. Also on tap: the Hellzapoppin Circus Sideshow Revue, a vaudeville freak show of wonder by Hellzapoppin’s Ringleader and Producer, Mr. Bryce “The Govna” Graves. In addition, excitingly, the festival will be hosted by Steve-O (MTV’s Jackass); and special guest Lou Brutus (SiriusXM). The fest takes place September 9th – 12th at Blue Ridge Amphitheater, a long-awaited large-scale concert venue in Southwest Virginia. August Burns Red Books “10 Years Of Constellations” World Tour

Metalcore leaders August Burns Red have announced the Constellations 10-Year Anniversary World Tour. The band will perform the album in full every night of the tour. The tour runs from the end of summer through the end of the year. The North American leg of the tour, presented by Merch Central, kicks off on June 20 in the band’s hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and runs through August 11 in New York City. Silverstein and Silent Planet will serve as support. The band will then travel to Australia in October and to Europe in November and December. Opening acts are for Australia are TBA, while Erra and Currents will be supported on the European leg. All dates are below. Currents – I Let The Devil In EP

Currents burst onto the progressive side of the Metalcore scene with their debut album back in 2017, displaying an array of influences including Architects and Northlane. Just over a year later, and the band is back with their third EP.

Continuing on the same path they have previously laid out, Currents display some great Mathcore guitar feats focusing on twangy, winding guitar tones similar to the likes of Periphery or Veil of Maya, showing those bands influences very clearly on their sleeves, though the combination of their influences in one complete sound gives Currents their own unique sound.

Similar to The Place I Feel Safest, I Let The Devil In (Sharptone) features dark, introspective lyrics. The opening track, ‘Into Despair’ exhibits this perfectly as vocalist Brian Wille’s tortured screams cry out “I never said I could make you better, What did you expect from me?!” It’s clear this isn’t just a set of generic lyrics, but something that as cheesy as it sounds comes straight from the heart. Wille’s performance from start to end shows the passion and authenticity of the emotions from the lyrics.

While the overall sound of Currents could be grouped alongside a growing number of Tech Metalcore bands, the vocals and emotional content fits far more alongside bands like Casey. If Currents keep up the development of their music, they could be one of Metalcore’s new trendsetters.

Codas – Currents EP

Largely, samples and Electronica really piss me off. Where’s the musical aesthetic or skill in roughing-up a squealing knob, for Christ’s sake (unless it’s George Osborne…)? When those bleeps are accompanied by low-fi riffs and drums which gradually increase in pulverising power, however, as with the opening track to this EP from one-man Brooklyn project Codas, the amalgam can be very effective.

An instrumental affair, Currents (Crowquill) is an Industrial sequence-fest. Sound effects twist and growl through ‘Follow The Blind’, which begins with an artificial drum section before the guitar grabs the song by its lapels to take us on a viciously swirling journey of grime-coated riffs and ‘Post’ leadwork. It remains as beguiling as it is compelling; the closing mess of howling feedback going absolutely nowhere, yet retaining a curious interest.

The nasty, fuzzed guitar and rapid drum battery, reminiscent of Royal Blood, marks ‘White Black’ as the most attractive track for those of us who appreciate more structured, less synthesised outbursts. The closing title track, however, returns to the tiresome ‘scratching’ and stuttering samples, only briefly punctuated by the warning growl of the strings. Rare, Post-rock lead strains occasionally threaten to keep the interest alive and there’s a harsher edge to the second half, with an eerie poignancy; but overall it’s an irritating quarter of an hour that I’ll never get back, and sadly indicative of the EP as a whole.

There’s obviously interest in this stuff, but really it’s nought more than incidental music in a movie scene and, for this technophobe, as dull as dishwater.
