Death Metal supergroup Umbra Vitae, consisting of current and former members of Converge, Hatebreed, The Red Chord, Twitching Tongues, Scorpion Child, and more, performed their first-ever live shows in December 2022. They releasaed their debut album Shadow of Life on Deathwish Inc. in 2020. The band made their live debut at The Middle East Nite Club in Cambridge, MA on December 15th, and Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY on December 16. FESTIVAL REVIEW: Damnation Festival 2022 Live at BEC Arena Manchester

Following the highly successful 2021 post-lockdown return of Damnation Festival to Leeds University, 2022 sees the event move back to its original home city of Manchester, now expanded to take place in the 6000-capacity BEC Arena.

 

The move, whilst probably inevitable, was always going to be something of a gamble. Some of the smaller rooms at the Leeds, Damnation were getting dangerously crammed, and the festival’s repute, ticket-buying demand, and band-booking clout had outgrown its former venue. But, on the other hand, many had come to regard the Leeds University Union, for all its quirks and eccentricities, as Damnation’s home.

ALBUM REVIEW: Armed for Apocalypse – Ritual Violence


 

How to best describe what Armed for Apocalypse’s Ritual Violence (Candlelight Records) sounds like? While I’ve never had the pleasure, I imagine it’s much like jamming a knife into an electrical outlet. Not sure if that analogy will work for everyone. Well, it’s like witnessing the centerpiece car wreck from Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. Shit, barely anyone saw that movie. Just know that it’s abrasive and the average listener should approach with upmost caution.

ALBUM REVIEW: Petbrick – Liminal


Petbrick are the brain-melting collaboration between metal legend Iggor Cavalera (Absent In Body / Cavalera Conspiracy / ex-Sepultura) and electronic noise maker Wayne Adams (Big Lad / Wasted Death). The unique collaboration has been perfected over the last few years in Adam’s London-based Bearbiteshorse Studio, so far yielding their debut album I in 2019, and a handful of EPs and split releases.
