ALBUM REVIEW: Other Half – Soft Action


 

Hailing from Norwich, England, post-hardcore trio Other Half have put out their second album Soft Action (Big Scary Monsters), consolidating their presence in the modern punk scene. It is a record that keeps the adrenaline pumping throughout its fourteen-track run-through and brings solid production to an otherwise disorderly DIY kind of tone. Despite its title, the album is anything but soft.

Jamie Lenman has been an ongoing stalwart of the alternative rock UK scene since his early days in Reuben. Now with four albums under his belt as a solo act, Lenman has completely reinvented himself and sound to become one of the more eclectic acts England has to offer. After a cover album and a song featuring MC Illaman from Pengshui, where next, could Lenman possibly go? Well, it seems the solo artist has decided to completely disembark his traditional heavier punk rock sound to embrace more indie pop rock avenues with The Atheist (Big Scary Monsters).

Acclaimed artist and author Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!) has dropped her second solo release of the pandemic with At War With The Silverfish EP, released on her own Big Scary Monsters label. The seven-song effort follows along the raw, stripped-down nature of 2020’s essential Stay Alive release, and recorded in halves between at Grace’s TinyQuietStudio in Chicago and at Electric Eel in St. Louis, and mixed by Marc Hudson, her bandmate in Devouring Mothers. Iconic Rocker Laura Jane Grace of Against Me! and The Devouring Mothers has released a surprise digital album today on all streaming platforms. The album Stay Alive (Big Scary Monsters) was created during the pandemic and recorded in July by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio. The physical release will arrive on December 11th.
