Bio-Cancer – Tormenting the Innocent

1604790_801349123212769_1554248567_n

As my good colleague Dan Swinhoe recently noted in his stellar review of the new Reign of Fury album, it’s easy to have preconceptions about thrash albums based on the cover alone. The artwork for Greek quintet Bio-Cancer is exactly what you’d expect from a latter day thrash outfit; designed by genre stalwart Andrei Bouzikov, luridly coloured, biohazard symbol and a freakish, multi-limbed mutant. So far so Municipal Waste, right? Well you’d be wrong, for Bio-Cancer aren’t here to party; they’re here to rip your fucking head off.

It’s fairly safe to say that Tormenting the Innocent (Candlelight) is one of the most vicious sounding, aggressive thrash albums of all time. If you think this is hyperbole, do yourself a favour and listen to the barbaric, light-speed assault on the senses that is opening track ‘Obligated to Incest’ and if you’re still standing, strap yourself in for a further half-an hour or so of brutal, yet catchy riffs, devastating blast-beats and feral, demonic shrieks courtesy of the band’s ace in the hole; vocalist Lefteris who delivers his lines like Steve Sousa with a piranha forcibly inserted up his backside.

It’s not hard to see why the band has described their sound as “ear-piercing thrash” when tracks such as ‘Boxed Out’ and the ninety-second maelstrom that is ‘Haters Gonna… Suffer!’ are akin to having skewers inserted in your lugholes. But just when you thought you had them figured out, what sounds like an oboe commences ‘F(r)iends or Fiends’ and the band demonstrate just what superbly skilled musicians they are, as lethal melo-death style guitar lines, mature rhythmic interplay between bass and drums and a gloriously exuberant solo blow the roof off.

Deftly welding skull-crushing power with measured songwriting nous, Bio-Cancer are that rarest of things; a thrash band with its own identity. Disgustingly talented, full of beans and proof that being pissed-off can be pretty damn fun; these lads have a future as bright as the glow from a field of toxic waste ahead of them.

Foreseen – Helsinki Savagery

Foreseen_HS

Thrashers Foreseen have been called “Finland’s answer to Power Trip.” Formed in 2010, the band had only released a few EPs and splits up until now, but with their debut album Helsinki Savagery (20 Buck Spin) they sound more like Finland’s answer to every aggressive thrash outfit ever.

Mainly labelled as a Crossover Thrash band, Foreseen combine Slayer-like speed and aggression with stomping hardcore. If you like Municipal Waste but feel the vocals aren’t ferocious enough, these guys are just up your street. It’s aggressive, raw, and full of circle pit inducing headbangers. Anyone who wears patches on their denim vests and claims to like 80s metal should enjoy this.

Instrumental opener ‘Slam Savagery’ combines Reign In Blood (Def Jam) era shredding with early Megadeth-levels of guitar histrionics. ‘Death Injection’ is a high octane slab of brutality, featuring rasping vocals, gang shoutalongs and stomping breakdowns. Whether it’s the squealing ‘Market Target’ or the slower brutality of ‘Structural Oppression,’ there’s very little let up.

Foreseen took a look at 80s thrash and condensed it down to 40 minutes of snarling, shredding and solos. Individually, there’s not a weak song among the lot. Tracks toward the end – ‘Delusion of No Consequence,’ Paving The Way’ – are filled with the same levels of urgency and searing goodness as the opening numbers. The only criticisms you can throw at the album is the lack of variety. While it’s a formula that works, there’s almost no deviation from the standard thrash blueprint. But why fix what isn’t broken?

There’s little, if anything, that hasn’t come before in the realm of thrash metal. Luckily crossover hasn’t been played over and over to death, and Foreseen do enough to avoid sounding hackneyed. They might not be too subtle about hiding their influences, but the energy they put into in the record makes Helsinki Savagery a great record for banging your head to.

Protestant – In Thy Name

Protestant do not deal in subtlety.

In Thy Name (Halo of Flies/Throatruiner) is the Milwaukee four-piece’s fourth album since they formed in 2004, it’s eight tracks of Crusty and raw black metal with muscular hardcore and punk aggression spread over half an hour. From the opening blasts of ‘Vulture’ to the blistering final track ‘Delusion’, it’s a relentless barrage of pained screams, rusty chainsaw guitars and blast beats. The sound Protestant create is genuinely unnerving it’s so dark and aggressive.

Protestant do a good job of straddling the black/punk divide. It’s savage and filled with urgency but retains a sinister sounding edge about it. Whether it the punk groove of ‘Carrion’ or the pure fetid blackness of ‘Blood’, the band manage to prevent the album becoming stale – something that is always a risk with this kind of uncompromising music.

If you like your metal raw, noisy and aggressive, they don’t come much more angry and crusty than Protestant. If you could hear raw hatred, it would sound a lot like In Thy Name.
