On The Road… with Opeth And The Sword

Few bands will divide fans like Opeth, and fewer bands still care as little what you think about them. “ProgOpeth” is here to stay and “Melodeathandblackenedwhatchamacallit Opeth” are only coming out to play once in a blue moon; and only in a live setting. Deal with it.

That is just fine with us here at Ghost Cult, who celebrate the entire catalog of the great band from Sweden. Our own Senior Editor Metal Mark commented in his review of their new album Sorceress “We are witnessing a band in their progressive peak, and although many have come before them in this genre, they have just set a new standard with Sorceress.” The album is a masterpiece and that’s true, certain to vie for end of year accolades. On the heels of a special show and set list in New York’s Radio City Music Hall (“An Evening of Sorcery, Damnation and Deliverance”), Opeth returned to their familiar set with many of the same tracks for the Boston crowd the next night. The packed house at the House of Blues turned a lot of skeptics into true-believers again with classic tracks like ‘Ghost Of Perdition’, ‘Demon of The Fall’, ‘The Drapery Falls’ and ‘Hex Omega’. When the band plays these unfuckwithable jams, in addition to the proggier fare, can one really complain about the quality of the set? We think not. Of course they closed with ‘Deliverance’. Still one of the best songs ever live or otherwise. Opening up these shows for The Sorceress Word Tour are good-guy stoner dudes The Sword. They are supporting last year’s excellent High Country (Razor & Tie) release, and their recently released chilled little brother, Low Country. The photo set here is brought to you by Hillarie Jason for Ghost Cult.
