MY FAVORITE CONCERT MEMORY: Casey Aylward of Astronoid

Astronoid just released their stellar sophomore album via Blood Music. The band is currently on tour opening for Between The Buried and Me and Tesseract. Casey Aylward shares his Favorite Concert Memory in a guest post for Ghost Cult. Submitted for your approval: the greatest live band ever, The Dillinger Escape Plan!

Picking a favorite memory from a show at my age is terribly difficult but there are a few that immediately came to mind. Interestingly enough all three memories are from the same band but different shows, so I’m gonna take that as a sign and go with the recently deceased and always incredible The Dillinger Escape Plan. I’ve seen Dillinger more than any band probably, including seeing them with Gil Sharone in Seattle during the Ire Works tour. Big flex. However, this story will take place in 2010 in Hampton Beach N.H. at the Casino Ballroom. Brett, Dan, and I went to see Dillinger support the Deftones who were supporting Diamond Eyes, which is my favorite Deftones record. (Maybe there is an argument here, but it’s close). Show was incredible and Brett and I made our way close to the barricade for DEP. As expected the set list was incredible, but there was a moment towards the end of Milk Lizard where the song explodes and Greg repeats, “this feels like never-ending.” For some reason, we locked eyes and he felt like I should finish the song, I assume. He then threw his wireless microphone to me, I SOMEHOW caught it in a sea of 2,600+ people and finished the song, then threw him the microphone back. (Perfect throw, nailed it) I got to finish one of my favorite Dillinger parts ever, on my favorite Dillinger record ever (non-negotiable to me really). We found Dan after and thought it was Greg who finished the song, his eyes aren’t great, so that was a cool compliment. Brett then broke his nose when the Deftones played Engine No. 9 I think. I found Brett in the bathroom bent over a sink that was full of blood, good times. Brett seems to think Greg May have remembered me from a show that coincided with my 21st birthday. Dillinger had just released Chinese Whispers as a single and I memorized the song/words and sung them in Greg’s face. He seemed kind of blown away and almost took my arm off with a swing of his very large arm in an act of what I can only describe as him being fairly excited that someone had taken very quickly to new material. I don’t think he remembered me, those fellows have probably 2000+ shows under their belts, but it’s a nice memory anyway. I guess you’ll have to ask the man himself some time.
