EP REVIEW: He Was A God – The Smile and The Scar

Hailing from Southern Connecticut, Progressive Metal band He Was A God, recently unleashed their three song EP The Smile & The Scar. A first for this band, however, they are not new to the scene. Chris Densky (Genitorturers, Deadstar Assembly, Adva), Tony Pellino (Transfixed Movement, Adva), Dan Perrone (Adva, Odessa) and Ray Zvovushe (King Sexy, Adva) have been making music together since grade school. The addition of vocalist Ben Curns completed their lineup and He Was A God was formed.

Throughout my first listen to ‘Amadeus’, I am drawn to the vocal harmonies and guitar riffs reminiscent of Alice In Chains as well as the precise, powerful drumming I have come to know as Densky’s unique style. The lyrics pull you in to feel the anguish of self reflection as well as the desperation for relief from shame.

‘Indelible’ continues to explore feelings of despair and seeking salvation, however the feel of this song is different from ‘Amadeus’. The guitar and vocals working together brings a slight flavor of System Of A Down to this piece which begged me to listen again.

‘Two New Stars’ explores the feeling of loss of an innocent loved one taken too soon from this life. Her eyes are still shining down on this life giving the aggrieved permission to carry on in spite of their scars. It’s a very powerful, relatable message that brings some measure of peace to a painful experience.

He Was A God has released an official lyric video for ‘Amadeus’ and will be adding show dates to introduce themselves to you. The Smile & The Scar is available now on all digital and streaming platforms.
