Doyle – Abominator

doyle-abominatorFinally, the long awaited solo record from Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, Abominator, (Monsterman Records) is upon us. Sure he released another album under the name Gorgeous Frankenstein but that is just as hard to find as Kryst the Conqueror. One of my favorite records of the year, it’s not leaving my rotation anytime soon. This is the album you wish The Misfits would put out. These are some fast, groovy and heavy ass songs. If you’ve heard the Cuts from the Crypt release from The Misfits, Doyle still has a ton of dangerous riffs, and on Abominator, riffs are taken to the next level.

Doyle doesn’t play guitar, he punishes it. His solos just scream errie-ness . He writes some of the most aggressive and catchiest hooks that transcend punk, hardcore and metal. Singer Alex Story from Cancerslug sounds like he was born to sing in the band. His lyrics fit so perfectly with these songs. From the Gut wrenching opener ‘Abominator’ to the ballad-ish ‘Dreaming Dead Girls’. ‘Bloodstains’ showcases his many voices in an almost five-minute epic. His vocals slightly remind me of former Misfits singer Michale Graves, just with more bass and grit.

There is a little legacy feeling to the band, with Dr. Chud on drums I can’t think of anyone else who could or should play with Doyle. Bassist ‘Left hand’ Graham, also played with Chud in Michale Graves’ solo band Graves. Graham is a monster player, although Doyle also played some bass on the album. His bass tone is thunderous, commanding and most importantly, well mixed. On “Cemeterysexxx” he has this really cool lounge, club groove feeling going on to it. You could almost smell the smoke in a dimly lit club somewhere. While on “Mark of the Beast” you can really hear how tight this rhythm section is.

The production on here sounds great and the album cover with the Crimson Ghost image hidden in the background is awesome. Doyle has a solid lineup and some killer (pun intended) tunes. I look forward to hearing more for this band. The world needs more Doyle music. You can get the album directly from Doyle here.
