CONCERT REVIEW: Overkill – Prong – Cultus Black: Live at The Chance

It’s really good to visit The Chance for a show after two years. It’s a long Metro-North Railroad train ride from the city but it’s always worth it once you’re there.

Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina; Cultus Black opened the night with their brand of theatrical Deathcore and Nu Metal goodness. You’ll also get vintage Overkill vibes just seeing them.

Prong did not disappoint, armed with new drummer, Griffin McCarthy. They came blasting out with a nine song set made up mostly from the Cleansing album ( “Cut-Rate,” “Whose Fist Is This Anyway?”) and up to the more recent “Zero Days.” Bassist Jason Christopher and Griffin sounded natural without a step missed from last time I saw Prong with Art Cruz (now in Lamb of God). I don’t know what I have greater respect for, Tommy Victor’s guitar playing, or his knees! This man just stays in the air. I look forward to hearing what this lineup does in the studio.

Overkill looked a little different this time out, as long-standing guitarist Dave Linsk sat this one out. Filling is Vio-Lence and former Machine Head guitarist Phil Demmel. Kind of ironic as Phil’s axe-mate in Vio-Lence is original Overkill guitarist Bobby Gustafson. By nature of filling in for Slayer in 2018 and and Lamb of God on Shiprocked, Phil is becoming the journeyman last minute fill-in guitarist of metal.

Overkill pummeled us with eighteen songs from thirteen albums. They still sound like a hungry band and still manage to surprise you. It’s been a very long time since I heard these bangers, “Horrorscope” and “Long time Dyin.” Those alone were worth the trip.

Bobby Blitz took a moment to acknowledge the passing Frank Pallet, the owner of The Chance who passed away last year. Someone who has given them opportunities throughout their 40 plus year career. Myself, the staff, and crowd loved that. I’ve played this stage and have had many memories and friendships because of Frank. This Grinch’s heart grew at least one size.

With songs From Feel the Fire, all the way to Wings of War, you’d be one uptight person to not enjoy this set list. This tour is worth getting out of your house for.
