CONCERT REVIEW: Gary Numan – I Speak Machine: Live at The Paradise

The Paradise, Boston, MA 3/14/2022

I have been to quite a few concerts since the world began to re-open and attempt some semblance of normal but so far none have left me with the sense of inspiration and hope the way that the Gary Numan show at The Paradise in Boston has. Not even being crammed into the most challenging venue in the city could crush my spirits. (photographers are not allowed in the barrier and there are few good places just to watch from).

The set was about 90 minutes of sheer joy exuberantly expressed by Gary and the band spanning five albums of songs from his expansive discography of over forty years, and not a dud in the bunch. Each song drew from the next, juxtaposing perfectly to evoke a theme and not so much of a “hey we have to play this too,” kind of way. No matter if you have been a fan since “The Pleasure Principle,” like me, or just recently jumped on board with the 2021 release, “Intruder,” there was something for you.

Most of the audience could only glimpse the stage in the fleeting moments of view between each other’s heads so were not able to take in the full impact of the stellar light show nor the true elegance of Gary’s very physical performance. Even so, you could not help but be entirely rapt by the music and the sound of his unique and emotional voice. I don’t think a single person left before the final song which is pretty rare honestly.

The show left me feeling good for days. In this crazy world of today I can’t begin to express how much that means. Thank you!

On a final note I can’t leave out the opener, I Speak Machine. Honestly, I was at fault for not doing my duty in checking out this artist before the show since I had never heard of it. What a great compliment to the tour! Electronic anger combined with vocal beauty is how I saw it. I have been listening to her back catalog since the show. One of my favorite things is discovering new music that I actually like on these tour packages. That was a bonus
