ALBUM REVIEW: Turmion Katilot – Omen X

When I was young and brash and had two working knees, I used to visit the high street in Camden, London. Me and my mates would dance ourselves into oblivion at the Electric Ballroom, take the night bus home, hit a Tescos for sausage rolls, and eat them right out the package – cold, before returning to Surrey Quays just before the sun rose.

Those were the times!

I mention this because that’s what I thought of upon listening to Turmion Katilot’s Omen X (Nuclear Blast). Happy Nostalgia. Turmion Katilot is everything that is wicked fun about clubbing and music. There is that “throw-back” sense to the music but Omen X has that remastered modern forward-thinking vibe.

Since 2003, this Finnish Industrial Metal band has been laying down some amazing beats and just totes raving out. Omen X starts out with a video game-esque ‘Totuus’. It is full of shrill keyboards, flaming guitars, and a psychotic forward momentum. My favourite tracks are ‘Puoli Valtakuntaa’ and ‘Sormenjalki’. Both are fun, in your face, dance party beats. But, from ‘Vie Se Pois’ to ‘Sormenjalki’ to ‘Kuolettavia Vammoja’, each song gets you pumped up to have a boatload of fun. The sound of the album, the tone and vibe, scream have fun and let it all hang out.

Make no mistake, though, this is a heavy album. Turmion Katilot imbued Omen X with a metal element; but it’s interwoven with other genres.

Omen X is the best of industrial, house/trap, disco rave music. It’s hard-driving, sweaty, musky; listeners end up leaving it all on a dance floor. Omen X is a wall of sound that makes it impossible to sit still. The music is frenetic and infectious. Think the bastard child of Rammstein and White Zombie. Omen X is the album from for any rave, or warehouse party, or to thoroughly annoy your uptight neighbours.
