Thyrant – What We Left Behind…

Despite their infancy as a band, the story of Thyrant is one that stretches for a couple of decades in the local metal scene of Malaga, Spain. Having been friends for a long time but in various different bands, the group finally came together and began jamming and forming ideas in 2015, all with a love and passion for metal in many of its styles; a diversity that is clearly showcased on début What We Left Behind…(Indie), which despite requiring refining, definitely shows some potential and real passion throughout.

With a wide range of influences, plenty of positive signs show through and make this a tricky prospect to pigeonhole, with deathly growls and songs that range primarily between old school Death Metal and pure grooves, it is clear that Thyrant isn’t afraid to try their hand at other tricks. ‘E.O.S.’ stands out, for example, as a much thrashier number, whilst ‘Bury Me’ shows a penchant for Iron Maiden-like dual guitar wielding and anthemic solos and they get even more grandiose in the first wave of Black Metal tributary closing track ‘Carving The Stone’.

Whilst they offer quite the palette, unfortunately What We Left Behind… suffers majorly by it being steady and ultimately forgettable throughout. Memorable in the sense of a wide scope but song-wise these just don’t stick with the listener, and at worst often seem aping to the greats rather than having any unique vision for themselves.

Any band that attempts to pull off the tall task of real diversity in their sound should at least be celebrated for that alone, and when it works it can lead to truly special pieces. Whilst not being a huge misfire, or without worth at all, What We Left Behind… won’t sit in those such echelons at all. A decent and pleasing enough listen with plentiful clear love for the craft and potential growth; but ultimately this will just fall into the shuffle of the years offerings, likely to be forgotten.
