ALBUM REVIEW: The Last Ten Seconds Of Life – Disquisition on an Execution

Disquisition On An Execution surpasses the confines of being a meager release. It’s The Last Ten Seconds Of Life’s eighteen-minute soundtrack to accompany a lecture on the best way to snap a victim’s neck in one fell swoop. The four-track EP – courtesy of mammoth label Unique Leader – is an inescapable assault – a hodge-podge of dense, declarative deathcore. Fits and starts of feral madness fuel the Pennsylvanian foursome.

Tyler Beam’s vile harsh vocals kill with surgical precision. It’s a controlled demolition. TLTSOL’s riff-less aggression reaches an entirely more brutal level thanks to Dylan Potts’s thunderous, unforgiving double-bass pedaling. The mini-album spits in the face of conventional guitar structuring, allowing Wyatt McLaughlin to treat the songs as a blank canvas with zero constraints or boundaries. The impenetrably opaque stringwork lifts up its battered prey before delivering the coup de grâce. Bassist Andrew Petway acts as the immovable anchor with which Disquisition is able to stabilize. The moving parts coalesce for a brand of deathcore which feels more like being dragged through the mud and into the forest, and less like spiraling through a tornado of technicality.

As for the album artwork; a darkened stick figure-like being is Spartan kicking someone from behind, effectively penetrating the victim’s chest cavity entirely. The accompanying blood splatter is the cherry on top for this accurate depiction of what it feels like to listen to Disquisition On An Execution.

Where other bands might dink and dunk, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life obliterate. Having spent a portion of 2022 touring with the ageless Cattle Decapitation, it would be safe to say TLTSOL took quite a few notes. However that would be doing the band an injustice. These guys already amassed a reputation of being catastrophically destructive. And this EP is but further proof of that.
