ALBUM REVIEW: Konvent – Call Down the Sun

“Hell yes…!” Those were my very first thoughts upon hearing the new Konvent. This new cut Call Down The Sun (Napalm Records) grabbed right from the beginning. The new offering is an awesome blend of doom, black and death all wrapped up in a brutal display of metal prowess.

I really got into the tones created on this one: the first thing it did was to bring out the “gear head” / “tone searcher” in me. I would love to get a look at the pedalboards and amps used to create this wall of sound is what I’m trying to say here. I love the searing yet earth-crushing presence of the guitar, the slow headbanging, almost tribal beating of the drums, and the “from the very depths of hell” vocals.

I was able to dig in with this one, the pace is set up tastefully. I think listeners will definitely enjoy the cool guitar sections moving around “behind the scenes” with vocals also moving from low growling guttural to amazing highs as the movement in each piece dictates. Huge and powerful, every aspect of this new album screams pure metal.

One thing I always look for when a band presents a new album is that album’s ability to translate to the stage. We have all been to shows where it just didn’t seem the same. Something seemed to be missing. Whether it be over-production, or to many unnatural elements, the live performance seems to simply fall flat. I can assure you this will not be the case here. I for one cannot wait to experience this first hand. I have listened to this over thirty times and have not gotten bored with any aspect of it.

To be honest I hadn’t listened to Konvent very much (which of course is my own damn fault), but this album will definitely change all of that. So, I would definitely recommend this new album to anyone looking to add something brutal to the record collection.
